This is a WONDERFUL WONDERFUL video!!!! One thing to remember. When you wake up with that tube in your mouth, that is inserted into your trachea, IT IS SO IMPORTANT to JUST RELAX! It does not hurt! I know from experience, as I've had these tubes in many many times. I require a ventilator long term, so now I have a trach. But Whenever I woke up on a ventilator, I was always relieved, because, it brought a rest from struggling to breathe. It gave my body a chance to get TRUE REST! When I woke up on the ventilator, I would always let it do all of the work. I never tried to fight the ventilator, or breathe over it's breaths. When I had that tube in, I was going to let it do ALL OF THE WORK!! When it was time to breathe on my own, I did breathe on Pressure Support, but always struggled. Now, have a trach, am on home mechanical ventilatory support, and I'm to be on the vent at all times. The vent breathes for me. That's what it's there for. So, when you're on the ventilator, your job is to RELAX!!!! Think of something PLEASANT! Get your mind off that fact that you have a tube in your throat. Think of something pleasant. Take your mind to a place where you feel comfortable. BECAUSE That tube is there to help you!! It's there to let your body rest, while you heal! If you start gagging, and fighting the ventilator, that's going to make your heart rate and blood pressure increase, and then they will have to give you more sedation then you should have. Sedatives can be good when necessary, but they can also have problems that come with being on continuous sedation. The beds in my hospital play classical music, and nature sounds. So that was what comforted me. Music is so wonderful for the body! It's healing effects on the body, physically, and mentally, are so profound! The tube will come out when they see that you're ready for it to be removed. Until then, take that time to REST!

Very good information. I had open heart bypass surgery in June 2017. Would have been great if I had been able to watch a video like this before the surgery. Everything that you said is true. Walking, deep breathing exercises, and eating heart healthy meals are all key factors in recovering from the surgery.

Your body is typically shaved from head to toe. Would be nice to know this rather than wake up and wonder what happened.

Wouldn't it be nice if we who have problems with being exposed to opposite gender could ask for and receive same gender teams? Also, why in the heck can't we shave ourselves? If this happens to me I will shave myself and my spouse will be present at time I get ready for the procedure. Not sure I could go through with it.

I didn't wake up and was shaved. I was shaved before the surgery shaving is not really an issue. It's all part of what is done

I had a triple by-pass 6 months ago. I was (pleasantly) surprised when the nurse scrubbed me down in the shower before the surgery. The surgery was postponed so I had to be showered again next day. This time by a student nurse under the supervision of an older nurse. All were unfazed by scrubbing a naked older male. I didn't mind, but I do wonder if this is common or is it unique to the hospital where I was operated on?

They skip totally through the fact you are laying on that table with many people seeing you totally naked, shave your whole body, have people of opposite gender doing scrub etc. Not for me. Give me the new modicine underwear or the covr garments for cardiac surgery, knee surgery, hip surgery etc. Doctors and nurses developed both of these surgery wear undergarments. Give us same gender teams if that makes us feel better. This poor man has no male caregivers.

This helps me so much, as I prepare for my surgery. I will also be in St. Mary's and I will document my journey. The team in St. Mary's already went over and above when I had my angiogram.

Constantly seeing that surgical Nurse Reappear again and again is both Annoying and seems Ominous!
