We've all been told to study as much as possible for technical interviews. But have you wondered if there's a better way to prepare for software engineer interviews? Is there a way to not feel anxious and stressed before your interview? I'll tell how in this video.

Holy crap - Great video!....thought I was insane thinking that grinding leetcode and studying for hours on end was a waste of time (well not a waste of time but not worth the stress). Just for the record - I'm an average developer with about 7 years experience. No real specialization unfortunately. I consider myself a generalist due to the project experience that I've had (a lot of bouncing around to different technologies/projects as a consultant). What I try to do: SPECIFICALLY FOR AN INTERVIEW - If you're not getting interview requests after a couple weeks of hunting, tweak your resume a bit to make it more inviting/appealing (doing this now). I've sent our maybe 30 applications and have gotten interview request from 2 companies. I feel like I should be getting more so I'm going to play around with my resume to see if it makes a difference. If you're getting no callbacks after 50-100 resumes and you're experienced, revisiting your resume may be the solution. - Try to apply to recently posted (as in the last few days) positions. You can apply to older ones of if you want but don't expect callbacks from those. - Find positions where I think that my skills are a good fit - Apply to as many jobs as possible but still take time out for yourself daily (if you're not working). I personally do 4 or 5 a day and then spend the rest of the day for myself (working on personal projects, casually reviewing interview questions, gaming, gym, resting, spending time with loved ones). - Check Glassdoor to see the interview process (if possible). If I have to do 4+ rounds and/or multiple rounds of coding challenges/technical...I would normally opt out LOL. Honestly not trying to work at a FAANG company (or a company aspiring to be a FAANG company). Just want a livable salary and some job security. People will say that this is settling at this point in my career. You may be correct - but busting my a** to get a job at a fancy company for a 150k+ salary isn't really something I'm aspiring for. Making 90k with benefits, remote work and 3 week or unlimited PTO, is good enough. I have all that I want in my life - just want to save/invest and live comfortably. Anything more is a bonus. - Look at job responsibilities and review interview questions on those topics to make sure those concepts are fresh in my mind. Normally this will be topics I'm already familiar with but may be rusty on. - Take some time and prep notes about past projects that you've worked on so that you can competently talk about them if asked. This is applies to talking about your self as well - in a sense you're trying to sell yourself..so make sure that you have a good sales pitch. 😀 GENERALLY (OUTSIDE OF INTERVIEW PREP) - Stay positive and don't take rejection personally (this is a hard one for me..but I know that this is how I should operate). Take each interview as a learning experience. - Take some time out to read up on what's new in your technology domain (new javascript frameworks, DB technologies, etc) - This maybe contradicting what I said earlier but if you want to do leetcode/hackerrank/etc do it for the fun/learning experience but not specifically as interview prep. And try not to grind it..one or two problems a day is enough to keep your mind mossy. - **IMPORTANT** Work on personal projects/look at courses to keep your technical skills up or at the very least to play around with technologies that you don't use daily. For me - I'm going to study up on Docker. I've used it but have no idea how to build a docker container and deploy it so this is a skill that I'd need to know and almost every job description has it in there. Once again, this doesn't have to be A LOT of time but devoting an hour or two a day to professional development will go a long way. MY MOST RECENT INTERVIEW EXPERIENCE: Made it through the HR Screen, a technical interview (asked to talk through a small algorithmic question), 3rd round was with the hiring manager and I flubbed this interview not being able to answer some basic javascript/react/css/database questions that I would've done a lot better on had I had taken some time to review related interview questions beforehand. I felt really bummed out because I knew that a little more preparation would've been the difference between me going to the next step (offer or CEO interview) vs continuing my job search. Also asked the hiring manager for feedback and he told me to study up on what's new out there and don't just rely on past experience (as they wanted someone who'd be able to apply these new concepts to their current application). Good hunting out there everyone - praying for your success (and my own - Looking forward to the day when I have a steady paycheck again!)
