How I started. FEMA recommends 72 hr food and water storage. I did that. Pain-free. Then I made it 10 days. Really, what's the difference between 3 days and 10 days? Then I started buying sales and getting larger quantities of solid shelf-stable items. I found it easier to purchase and store a years worth of beans. Then a years worth of rice. A years worth of flour. A whole bunch of pasta. I have a basic long term basement pantry. This year I'm going to be dehydrating vegetables. I do one batch a week and when the garden starts producing, maybe more.

A year ago I was in a serious car accident. Food storage was such a blessing. Because I was out of commission my family had to take over my responsibilities plus I was out of work. Food was not stressful during what was a stressful time because we were prepared. It’s so worth it.

I found out from Big Family Homestead that since baking powder doesn't store forever like baking soda, buy Cream of Tarter. It last forever when stored by itself. Mix 1 part baking soda and 2 parts Cream of Tarter and you have baking powder. Once you mix them together it's just like the baking powder you buy in the store, it only last for 6 months. If for some reason we can no longer buy a can of baking powder at the store and we have plenty Cream of Tarter and baking soda in our storage stored separately, we will always have baking powder. I have used this mixture making my homemade cakes, it works great!

There are no secrets in food storage, but there are many important and non important suggestions and you have many important suggestions. And thank you very much. It’s always an educational session watching The Provident Prepper. My wife and I are in our 70s and our appetites are much less than they were a few years ago. She would cook the entire box of spaghetti, one or two lbs which ever we had and one or two lbs of ground beef. For the two of us. She will eat leftovers once. Me, on the other hand, will eat leftovers until they are gone or gone bad. Many times food got thrown out. In our world of possibilities that had to change. I’ve seen many videos of rice or beans poured in a 5 gallon bucket and the top put on the bucket and stored. Also, I’ve seen rice and beans stored in Mylar bags with oxygen absorbers. To me there seems be a better way. Why open and expose all the five gallons at once? If you are feeding a large family that may be fine, but there are 2 of us. Sooooo, I store bulk items in food saver bags enough for two meals each. Some foods like grits, oatmeal, powered foods are stored in vacuum sealed jars. This way no food will be wasted and not all foods will be exposed. Also, if for some reason one bag is damaged or exposed not all food is affected. Storing this way does take more time, but I think it may be worth the time. Hey I’m retired. I have nothing but time. Not a whole lot left and there appears to be no reason to plan for 30 years of storage. If there is a secrete to preparing keep it a secret and JUST DO IT. You don’t need a spouse’s approval, just do it. Also, do the best you can. It doesn’t have to be perfect, just excellent will work. God bless.

@Patriot Pop I do the same! If I lack power, it will also be easier not to deal with leftovers, so I make small sized meal-in-a-jar type meals (just add water). I'd rather use my abundant time and the currently available utilities to process my preps now, so I have less to deal with when I am relying on them. I was glad to see your comment because so much of the focus is on prepping for multiple people (understandably), but it's nice to get tips like yours for those of us in similar situations.

@@jeanniewahine5443 I finally realized I needed to can my foods in pint or half-pint or even smaller canning jars. I am not feeding a large family so opening a jar should not result in the food going bad if there is no refrigeration. Uses more lids but works better for me.

@@kevinrehberg8758 Good suggestion! I use Tattler lids (and regular lids by ForJars). I use my already used lids for vacuum sealing dry goods in jars, so that's another way to get some more value out of them, if you have a vacuum sealer.

My secret is bi-annually or annually at the latest, I go through and do inventory of my food storage. I dust/clean, take stock of what I have, rotate if something inadvertently got pushed behind, bring items upstairs if they need to be used soon, consider anything new I might want to add or try. Get a shopping list of needed items. I'm bad at keeping a running daily checklist but this seems to work for me. Oh, and check that canning jars are still properly sealed...I've caught a few that unsealed over time.

I do the same thing. I also mark the bb date on the top of canned food so it's easy to put back on the shelf with the oldest in front. I usually do Feb and August (right before the harvest comes in so I know what I need to can.)

My greatest tip to get started: *First of all, focus on getting 1 year's worth of legumes and grains of your choice* . These 2 form a complete protein and will prevent starvation, and they are literally the first step on your food storage, because they are extremely inexpensive, produced in abundance, last a long time and is the foundation of a diet. After this, you could add whatever you want to the list.

The leaders of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints instructed: "Church members can begin their home storage by storing the basic foods that would be required to keep them alive if they did not have anything else to eat. Depending on where members live, those basics might include water, wheat or other grains, legumes, salt, honey or sugar, powdered milk, and cooking oil. When members have stored enough of these essentials to meet the needs of their family for one year, they may decide to add other items that they are accustomed to using day to day." Good post, thanks! I liked the idea of storing storage supplies (i.e., canning lids... ugh). I have aluminum foil, plastic wrap, parchment paper and wax paper in my storage. And, don't forget about cleaning supplies. Dish sponges, scouring pads, soaps. I witnessed a lot shortages in cleaning products over the last two years. An important idea is to practice with your preps. Learn how to be innovative with your resources.

What lovely ladies your friends are❤️. I think they are well versed and are a huge blessing! Thanks for being willing to join Kylene and help us get better prepared ❤️. I added in my food store binder a label for each of my items I rebottle like beans, rice, lentils, oatmeal,…. I cut out the nutritional information and the directions and paste them on a sheet of paper. And/or I roll it up and vac seal it right in the jar. I keep that binder with my food stores. I also add recipes for that ingredient after the info sheet. That way anyone can look at the storage manual and utilize the resources available. I also increased my storage of freezer paper and ziplock bags and added them to my already healthy stock of preserving supplies. For exactly the reason you pointed out, those random blessings! I just had the opportunity to put up 23 lbs of meat that was on a fantastic sale 👍🏻 I could definitely enjoy working along side all of you ladies and learning from your experience!!! I’m new to the concept of “food storage” in terms of what to keep for one year of survival. I always have kept a fairly well stocked pantry but nothing like I’m doing now. My freezers are filled so I don’t have space to do the freeze and thaw method right now. I’m planning to do freeze/thaw once we’ve gone through some of what’s in there. I feel like having freezers stocked is really important right now and once we’ve eaten through some of it and have space then i can start rotation in the freezers. In normal times I would deplete my frozen food and be mostly empty by August due to hurricane season and power outages and then replenish in October but I don’t feel comfortable doing that right now. I do have emergency backup power to preserve the frozen and refrigerated food. I would like to add that I recently bought something called Pump N Seal which is a good way to vacuum seal and reseal jars using a simple manual pump. I’ve been dehydrating my own potato slices and I used pump and seal to vaccum pack them in half gallon jars. Super helpful video and I’m so grateful to have access to KZbin to learn about these emergency preparedness tips and tricks. Great video!!

This was one of my favorite videos you have put out. I don't have a secret but I have started buying beef and chicken locally. This Sept I will get another cow for the freezer. I will also get whole chickens the same month. I sell jams and jellies at our farmer's market so I buy my produce there as much as possible. Plus, we have developed a strong group of preppers....5 couples...we help each other as much as possible. Yesterday I picked up 50# of sugar for one gal because she didn't have time. Community is so important. Finally, I learned to pressure can last year and I am having a blast. It's so satisfying to see all that food on our shelves. Tomorrow I'll be canning cowboy beans w hamburger.

Always encourage everyone to keep a 1 years rotation of what they currently eat because first you don't want to be worrying about the stress of changing your diet during a crisis, and secondly because a Year's worth of food will give you a year to plant and harvest a crop. I would also highly encourage you to consider using hand warmers instead of oxygen absorbers. Hand warmers do the same thing that oxygen absorbers do however when you open your package after long-term storage you will be able to verify the seal integrity stayed intact because the hand warmer will reactivate. When buying storage totes for food storage, be sure you get one that has a foam seal around the edge. This will keep bugs out, and reduce oxygen getting in. Get a FoodSaver with a vacuum attachment. Mylar is really kind of overrated, if you use these other techniques.

What do I do with all of this, as I live alone and I have a lot of storage for emergencies but the year flies by so fast and everything seems to hit their use by dates way before I need them!

My thought for the day that helps us is to have everyone help some with the cooking. That way my recipes don't die with me. My kids have been favorites on missions and at college because they can cook. We're introducing Africa to my apple pie filling on waffles! So i would say involve everone in what you store and how to prepare it. (Even if it means you have spam for one of them).

@@teridavis5367 I chop 2 large apples, (about 2 cups) put in a saucepan over medium heat. Add 1/2 cup brown sugar, 1 Tb. Water, 1tsp. Cinnamon, a dash of ginger and a dash of nutmeg. Cook it stirring occasionally until the juice comes out of the apples and forms a syrup. You may want to add a bit more sugar depending on the sweetness of the apples, until it tastes how you like. If it is thin you can thicken with a little cornstarch and water mixed. Really that's it. Just pour over pancakes or waffles. I've also bottled it in bigger batches to save for later. If you don't have nutmeg, some allspice works well. It's also fun to substitute some maple syrup for the water. Hope you like it!

Another fantastic video. Just a great general overview with great advice and tips. Thought your best advice for prepping for everyone is to reduce the stress in that time of crisis ratherthan fighting with panicked hoards last minute. Just avoid it. Must say in the battle of the Prepper sexes, you and many other ladies are kicking it. Keep it up. Great channel and can't say enough what a great reference library your playlist is.

Could I ask you to explain the buried freezer in a video? I understand the concept, but is this a working freezer, or one that you are letting the earth maintain temperature? Is the freezer accessible from your basement?

First time watching you channel. So great! I really need recipe ideas for cooking from pantry staples items only. I tried to find some ideas online but they usually also incorporate fresh ingredients. I'm just thinking ahead if fresh ingredients become hard to come by.

I had a decent amount of food stored in my basement, but somewhere there was a break along the waterline, and our basement flooded to the depth of 8 inches, and I lost everything that was on the floor, or stacked on the floor. Even my 3 gallon pails with flour went over on their side with all that water, and it seeped in, ruining it all. It just makes me sick. And all my home canned food that took so much time and energy? The tops are rapidly rusting on there while I try to get everything cleaned up and dried out. It also fried my large chest freezer! So, it was/is, a bad scenario all the way around. And I lost my husband in November! Am doing a LOT of praying!
