Just a note, rodents will eat through Mylar bags. I lost a lot of food due to mice. Mylar bags will work, but put the bags of food in a bucket to keep the little devils out!
@LeelaLu74 жыл бұрын
Absolutely! But I've even had rodents chew holes in plastic buckets. Luckily they were after something I had stored as fertilizer, not food. And it might have been rats, not mice. Just a heads-up. If you know there are rodents you probably need metal or glass containers.
@KowboyUSA3 жыл бұрын
@@LeelaLu7 Ain't that the truth! Rodents have chewed holes in our plastic water jugs and even our heavier plastic storage tubs. We've found that glass for smaller quantities of foods and steel trash cans with tight fitting lids for larger quantities work well.

@@KowboyUSA Yes, but they get expensive. Mouse traps are good insurance. I bait the snap ones with cheap peanut butter so I don't have them in the house. They can squeeze through the tiniest holes. And protect your seed supply because that is what they'll go after first!

☺To prevent browning, soak a few minutes in water with a little vinegar, or lemon/lime juice squeezed into it. Then proceed to dehydrate. ☺Then you can use that liquid to make bone broth, lots of starch and some minerals will be in that water. The little bit of vinegar helps get calcium from the bones into the broth. I would do it very slowly over hours, in a crockpot. Add water when needed. Vegetables towards the end.

Some people have told me before that some of their potato slices turned black after dehydrating. A way to stop this is to blanch them in a water and lemon juice solution (10% lemon juice) and then cool them in an identical solution (it also helps to place them back in the solution after slicing/cubing them, while you work).

Im Still Workin is back!!!! This is a great video 😉. Thanks!! I have both styles of dehydrators. I like the Nesco bc I can add more trays. I just let the dehydrator go during the night or put an appliance timer on. I have four dehydrators; Nesco and Excalibur. All excellent and durable. Some I bought thrifted and they work great.

I am entertaining the idea of getting a dehydrator and just looking around to see what all can be done with it. Your video was very well done and answered much of my concerns and wonders.

Wane The Seine Yep! Today, after looking at the 4, 40 foot rows of potatoes, I thought, "Good Grief! If these actually grow, what in the world will I do with all of these potatoes? According to all of the YT videos I have watched, I could end up with 1086 potatoes!! I repeat, "Good Grief!" Then I watched this video. Problem solved. (I had bought a dehydrator earlier this week) Thank you Prepper Potpourri!!

I had no idea you needed to boil them for several minutes before dehydrating!

Save the starch & dehydrate on fruit rollup tray for potato starch for baking with.

Never thought of that. Thanks for the tip.

How?
@oldtimerlee88205 жыл бұрын
@@pamwarren24 Boil to evaporate most of the water in the pot. Like cooking down tomatoes for sauce or paste. When you've evaporated as much as you think you can without burning the starch, transfer thickened liquid to fruit roll up trays. I haven't tried it ---> you may be able to make very shallow pans from aluminum foil to fit your trays, especially if you have square trays. Or use cut down disposable type plastic food storage containers to make dehydrating pans to fit.

Yup ... Great thickener for stew or gravy ... I'm not really fond of the flavor of flour ...

You might want to start by dehydrating drained canned pineapple rings. My kids used to love them dried.

Dehydrators are great for preserving the small amounts of stuff that aren't worth canning or can't be frozen.. For years I bought celery and cilantro for some dish and ended up throwing the leftovers out after it went bad. Now I dehydrate it - no waste & I don't need to buy more the next time I make the dish. Or if your garden only produces a few tomatoes, peppers, whatever, not enough to can - dehydrate them.
