I have a friend whose family used to own a factory that makes plastic buckets. He told me that all #2 plastic is food grade until it is used to store something toxic. The reason food grade pails are more expensive is the manufacturer has to pay a fee for using the NSF logo. The plastic is exactly the same.

When you get your bucket and lid, (or your Tupperware bowl and lid) they have gone thru two different machines and never touched either other or seen each other until you put them together, so you run the lid under hot water for a bit to warm it up (maybe even soften it depending on which brand etc) THEN put the lid on and then let it cool and now they are mated for life. then you can take it off, put your stuff in and put the lid back on.

A trick that was passed on to me from a painter so the paint would have a longer shelf life is to use a balloon to replace the amount of air in the can-then put the top on and store it. I think it would also work on storing the food in the bucket's when the supply starts getting lower to reduce the amount of air in the bucket keeping the food fresher for a longer period of time.

I dearly love buckets for a multitude of purposes. But, we decided to just "buy once, cry once" and pulled the trigger on a pallet of vacuum canisters. I'd even prefer backpacking bear canisters to buckets. A "tightly" fitting lid is not always a "sealed" lid. I'm sure you'll be fine for just a year. But, at that point, I'd rather be using Tupperware over a bucket lid I'd been removing every day for a year.....and you have the added benefit of downsizing as you go. At some point you'll have more air than food in the bucket. Never a big fan of that, not even for dog food. It's just a year, after all. Lol. That last month, everything you have left will fit in that bucket...lol. Keep up the great work.

If you can find them in bulk and cheap, Lentils have a better Protein to Carb ratio than beans (if you're looking for protein sources on the cheap). It's about insects, they can eat all your food within a year and you won't even know it until you open your container. Eggs exist in all grains, applied pesticides during packaging keep them at bay while on the store shelf. You can buy a 20 lb bag of food grade diatomaceous earth at Tractor Supply for cheap, gamma seal lids at Lowe's, mylar bags from the interweb, and Hot Hands hand warmers at Wal-Mart. Mix grains with diatomaceous earth as you pour into mylar bags placed inside the 5 gallon buckets, toss into mix 3-5 freshly opened hot hands, tie off mylar bags, seal buckets with gamma lids. You are creating an oxygen free environment and tiny razor blades for insects. You can rinse the diatomaceous earth off before you cook but you don't have to. The diatomaceous earth, if consumed, has the added benefit of killing intestinal parasites which will be a problem during grid down. If you cheap out on food storage you won't live to regret it.

kyndakrazy Yep, haven't researched the freezing process but it makes sense, however insect eggs and pupae in nature are not killed by a hard freeze during winter. I would think the mylar bags if given an airtight seal coupled with the oxygen absorbers do the trick because you are removing oxygen. I substitute hand warmers. Chemically they are the same thing as oxygen absorbers. I like diatomaceous earth for the anti parasite benefit and it keeps the insects suppresed while consuming the grains exposed to oxygen.
@jtnoodle6 жыл бұрын
There are 2 types of DE. One is safe for consumption and the pool stuff. Don't consume the pool stuff. Also, why waste all that water rinsing?
@jumpoffa50116 жыл бұрын
kyndakrazy, Freezing your dry goods for 2 weeks is an excellent idea and it works, however, there are food stuffs that you can use a different type of processing that will do the same thing. If you use your oven at 200 degrees Fahrenheit for 10 to 20 minutes, you can store your food in 1 gallon mason jars or smaller. For example, I put oatmeal in a 1 gallon mason jar, with the lid off, on a cookie sheet. I heat it up to 200 degrees for 10-15 minutes. I then take the gar(s) out of the oven and put the lid on immediately and let cool on the counter. The lid will vacuum seal and I have killed any insect that may have laid eggs in the oats. I do this with hard beans like kidney, blackeye, and pinto beans. If I was to seal my grains in Mylar bags I would do the same thing only I wouldn't seal the Mason jar. I would let the grains cool then put them in the Mylar bag, throw in a anti-oxygen packet, remove the air and seal, Then I would put the Mylar bag in a 5 gallon plastic storage container, HomeDepot, Lowes or food grade plastic bucket. As long as it seals tight and prevents any oxygen or sunlight to penetrate If I had flour or sugar I would use the freezer. This way they won't be affected by the temperature and turn light brown or melt. You will need to use food grade Diatomaceous Earth if you mix it with your grains. If your grains are infected the Diatomaceous Earth will kill the insects but you will still have the insects in your grains, as an additive to your grains. If you use the freezing or heating methods I have mentioned you won't have the dead bodies of the insects to contain with and your grains won't be visually seen as partially eaten. I grew Chinese Yard Beans last year. My family and I ate the beans, they are like green beans, but I saved some of the seeds for next years crop. What I didn't realize is that the seeds were infected with little beatles that destroyed my seeds. They also ate through the plastic bag the seeds were stored in. This year I will place them in the freezer for a few days to kill the insects but save the seeds. So my story holds true for all beans and grains or flour. There are insect eggs in these products and the producers of these products either use pestiside, freezing or heating to control any infestation or infection in their product(s).

Main staples peruano beans from Costco four one kilo bags in a carryall bag pretty good for storage. 5 kilo bags of Basmati rice after being opened invaded by critters and had to pick though several pounds getting them out. What concerns me a bit is I live in a VERY, VERY HUMID climate, particularly during the four summer months. Officially classified as "miserable" comfort index. For now have put some of the opened rice in to large ziploc bags and then the bags into i gal buckets with the lids sealed with a plastic sheet. I must say, it does look like they are the wrong lids. They look slightly bigger than the bucket opening. Check if the manufacturer stamped on the lid is the same as the one stamped on the bottom of the bucket. If they are the same, maybe it's the right lid and you just need to use a rubber mallet. I always use a rubber mallet to close these buckets. Don't use a hammer as this could crack the lid. Rubber mallets can be bought for $5 or less and are a very useful thing to have in general when a hammer is too heavy or too damaging for the job at hand.

Why all the emphasis on "Food Grade"? Unless you're storing your food IN DIRECT CONTACT with the plastic bucket, it shouldn't matter what the container is made from. Placing packaged foods - whether straight off the grocery store shelves or repacked in something like a mylar bag - inside the bucket shouldn't matter. I've stored many commercially packed dehydrated meals in metal ammo cans - with ZERO problems. The same holds true for storing foods like instant mashed potatoes inside of "popcorn tins".

Just a note....Home Depot Orange bucket is #2 HDPE but its not BPA FREE! Are you sure that's ok???
@christinaoklaohio79265 жыл бұрын
I get my food grade buckets from Sams baking Dept. You can get them free in most places they have lots they recycle. Just letting you know. Also most Walmart’s have them. They give you the lid that seals tight also. Hope this is helpful to you. God bless.😃

I know that the ones that Walmart sells the bucket and the lids don't fit together (I tried them in the store). I got ones that fit their buckets at Ace Hardware.

Have you tried using a rubber mallet to help you close the lid? Just hit the rubber mallet on the edge or rim of the bucket and it should close princess.
@UPGardenr7 жыл бұрын
You need a rubber mallet I have used 1000s of them, that is how we used to close them

try reversing the lids, they are SUPPOSED to be interchangeable, but they aren't always....

Yes, preppers use A LOT of rice, beans, and oatmeal in their stock. There are many different ways they can be made so we'll all be good. But, the silly side of me imagines people sitting around complaining about those staples like the Israelites did about the manna that was provided to them after a short time. I have found the same issue with the 5-gallon pails where the lid won't go on the pail. I've had to use a hammer to gently tap them to snap them into place. You have to tap all the way around the perimeter, not push down on the whole thing or tap it in the center.

Toss the lid in the oven. Thump it with a mallet

Looks like maybe you didn't peel the plastic ring off from around the lid which then allows it to snap on.
@PrepperPrincess6 жыл бұрын
Still have this darn bucket and lid. The plastic ring is peeled. It's just a piece of crap. I use the bucket in my shower now to catch extra water.

Had to throw out 25lbs of rice from either the lid shrinking or the weight of stacking. Either way it sucked. But on the good side of things It prompted me to go through collection and find out what items were ready to be restocked and what was ready for donation.
@wanneng87 жыл бұрын
I still think you got the wrong size lid. You should take it back to exchange it for the right circumference. You can tell the lid was not right, even if you jump on it. Also food grade is no chemicals in the plastic. Like BPA in water bottles. As long as you have the oats stored in a food grade bag then you will be safe. Otherwise the HomeDepot bucket will still leech into food.

Is this concern valid? The food tasting like the bucket.

None of the lids on the Walmart $5 buckets fit.

That Home Depot bucket is Ashley food-grade also
@rhondaholland46047 жыл бұрын
You should use food grade buckets because they do not leach harmful chemicals into your food. Many stores give them away. I've only ever had to pay for them at one store (a small mom and pop place) -- 50 cents per bucket so not a big expense.

Get some Gama Lids. There work great on 2 and 5 gl buckets.

I'm sorry girl. Those food saver one are normally for light use in restaurants/fast food type stuff only. You get the next shift or next days food or pancake mix and stuff prepared and you're right the lids have never fit. In my experience we have used the commercial size plastic wrap with rubber bands. They only come in those sizes because of the amount of people you are feeding. Great for feeding large groups of people or used as big mixing bowls or soaking beans or rice but storing food. . . I'm sorry you wasted your money on those. They do have uses. . . just not what you planned. . . .

Personally, I would put a weeks worth of whatever in a quart or gallon Mylar, seal those tight in those bags and stuff my bucket full. I have a cat so I buy litter in buckets. They're kind of square and lined can take made up meals in Mylar, stuff them in that bucket and LIVE MY LIFE without opinions from other folks. Use your knowledge PP not loose gums flapping.

I have many 5 gallon food grade buckets that I got for free from local eateries. I've never had a problem with one. Sometimes, it's not all that complicated. This is a free country, so you're entitled to rant all you like, though. Take care.

Chickens are omnivores. And will thrive on damned near anything. Meat scaps, bugs, veg peels, handful of cornmeal, grass. Feeding the chickens are the least of her worries.
