I call this my lights out kit, but it’s really more of a place that I put the supplies I don’t want touched, and I don’t want anyone to dig through on a daily basis.
What it’s Not...
It’s not everything you have or need. There are probably a lot of supplies that you have that won’t fit in a plastic tote, and there are a lot of supplies that are scattered around the house that you use regularly. We have items like candles, lighters, flashlights and solar chargers that we use regularly that don’t go in this kit.
It’s not for fuel or lamp oils. You don’t want to store kerosene or lamp oil in the same container with your other supplies, and if you store it in the garage you need to make sure everything in it can handle the extreme temperature changes…more on this later.
What it is...
It’s for stuff that you don’t want touched. The kids are notorious for taking batteries or mixing up dead batteries with new batteries, so I like to have a stash set up that I know for a fact that I have the supplies that I think I have.
It’s for stuff you won’t use regularly. Like the saying goes, 1 is none, and 2 is 1. I have supplies around the house that I hope will be there when we need them, and I have supplies stored in my lights out kit that I know will be there when I need them.
It’s an easy go to for family. I like having this kit setup because the last thing I want to do is be running around the house trying to find batteries and flashlights, and if I am gone I know that the family can just go grab the lights out kit and have everything they need.

Last night I was out Trick or Treating with my wife and kids and I was completely shocked at the sheer volume of people walking around in the pitch dark without glow sticks or flashlights. I had set up a glow stick for each of the four of us and a small flashlight each; my wife thought that it was overkill when we first left the house but was a little more thankful an hour later when it was hard to see your hand in front of your face due to the dark. People's lack of preparation never fails to shock and amuse me.

I'm a disaster response official in the Adventist Church. I think you've done an EXCELLENT video to get people thinking! Your observations about Solar are also sound. I have a 150 Watt Panel for my BASIC emergency power needs. I plan to eventually have 2 KW on my property.

3 years late but man thank goodness your video popped up in my feed. Our power always goes out. Most recent 2 days ago. This helps my family out a lot. Thanks for the information brother.

Something I found very handy is I put 4 solar lights along my porch. I then made some 2x4 holders, and bring 2 or three of them in when the power goes out. Then I either put them back out side or in a window to recharge.

All good but I would think more preppers should have cordless power tools like dewalt and milwaukee. They come in handy during a disaster. Like putting wood up around doors and windows and cutting tree limbs out of walk ways around house. They come with flashlights that will shine over 24 hrs on full charge. Impact drills for working on portable generators. They should be included in all kits.

One thing my family does is to give everyone their own flashlights, headlamps, and chargers to use when they need them. The rest go in our power outage kit.

Time to revisit your SHTF light box of goodies...Batteries, sterno inspections. I find sterno cans loose weight over time due to creep evaporation. I started vacuum packing them and they no longer evaporate.

for radio, try building crystal radios, using simple, at hand parts, so you can make one when needed.they don't need batteries, just an antenna, ground wire, condensing coil, and detector, diode. I made several, with different parts from my e scrapping. talk to other folks, about scrapping, prepping, and you could get some people that understand what you are doing. my trash picker gives me e waste from his trash disposal. happy scrapping and prepping!

I have a similar philosophy with "lights out kits" or "power outage boxes". While having everything in one place makes it easier for inventory or searching purposes, it would make it harder in an actual power outage. Unless you have an EDC flashlight, you would be stumbling in the dark for that kit so you could actually see; and even with an EDC flashlight, it's kind of odd that you would need a flashlight to get to the other flashlights. I should mention I don't have kids, so I have no need of hiding certain items. Just about the only items that I wouldn't keep everywhere are things like a Mr. Heater or heavier blankets, items that I can get to after I secure a light perimeter so I can see them clearly. Right now, I have flashlights and headlights in various areas of my house (first aid kit, bedroom, junk drawer, etc.) so that at any given time, I have quick access to a light. Some of those flashlights are in the form of emergency plug-in flashlights that charge until you need them and then will shine bright when it senses that the power is out. $5 a pop, and a great tool. It's also important to me to keep paths clear, so that no one trips over the misplaced chair or bag or something. Doing so also would help in the case of a fire. Overall, prepping for a power outage is more of a state of mind than buying a bunch of gear for it, though there is some gear that would help greatly. Edit: Also, be careful of the kind of candles you stock up on. Blueberry-acai birthday cake might be a great scent for on-and-off use as you settle down for the evening, but it would probably drive you nuts and fill your house after a few hours of continuous use. Scentless candles are probably the way to go.

As an apartment dweller I built a pallet couch instead of a bought couch that you can pull open. It has a huge amount of storage under the seats. Also put a lot of stuff under the bed and behind the hanging stuff in the closet. You could even fill up the oven whenever you don't use it.

get rid of half the clothes in ur closet u dont wear. Get a $5 tote(s) from walmart and store at the bottom of the closet(s). Put an emergency backpack with 24hr essentials and hang on back of door(s). U dont need to have EVERYTHING this man has, just get things for ur household. Im lacking in the 2nd Amendment area to be honest, but plan on buying a small pistol in the next couple weeks. good luck!
