honestly preparing for the worst case scenario is smart. it's not crazy or paranoia, it's literally just having a back up plan in case of anything and there's no issue in that

Not a prepper myself but I always have a box of sardines cans, few bags of pasta and a first aid kit lying around even before the pandemic. The rational was that whenever I got a flu or fell sick for a week, I don't need to leave my house and just relax and recoup. Whereas now it makes more sense to expand my stockpile for the "real rainy day".

A large number of our great-grandparents and all those before them were natural 'preppers', knowing how to forage, growing their own food, keeping their own animals, making preserves etc. They contended with the elements and sometimes wars when food was scarce. Seems to be a skill many of us have lost.

Good on him. I am a prepper been doing it since 2019 adding a little bit each week, when covid happened i didnt have to run to the shops and panic buy or clear the shelves and now with the rising cost of food it makes sense. Loss of a job, sickness, operation etc the list goes on. Better to have it and not need it than to need it and not have it, anything that gets near to use date can go to foodbanks if not used.

I converted a spare bedroom into a pantry/storage room. Got enough food and bottled water for at least six months. A coal fire for cooking and three tonnes of coal. A bbq with 100kg of charcoal and two chest freezers full of food - plus a generator with separate storage. If nothing happens then I'll make my way through it. If there is a reason for shortages, I'm prepared.

Been prepping since 2020 makes more sense than ever before to have food, water and medicine for rainy days. With the cost of living crisis and the War in Ukraine affecting everything, It looks like things will get much worse. Buying a bit at a time and rotating has given me peace of mind especially now with the cost of heating going up. It is better to be prepared than not, I hope that more and more people will start preparing because the government will not be able to help everyone when worst case scenario happens.

We have been told we may be having rolling power cuts. My house is all electric. I have bought a camping gas cooker, spare gas canisters, a whistling old school kettle, powered milk, torches, spare batteries, lighting both battery and USB powered, battery banks for recharging USB torches/lights and an old school AM/FM battery/solar/wind up radio as the Internet may go down. Bottled water, in case the pipes freeze or burst over the winter. Just the basics of be civilised/warm and comfortable, instead of sitting in the dark and cold depending on someone else to come to my aid. Just planning ahead as winter is only just starting.

@@Anon-xd3cf I have that covered. I bought a Jackery 240 (UK) and a 100 W Solar Panel. Multi-use, as it is a Prepping item for charging things if no power and always 100 per cent charged, ready to go, but also my Mrs uses a CPAP machine at night that runs on mains electricity to help her breathe, so it will run that when on 12 volt, as it only pulls 10 watts.

It’s funny when the reporter asked him about civil unrest or worse, it’s like she hasn’t read a history book. Multiple civilisations that have lasted many hundreds and/or thousands of years and no longer exist in their former states if at all. We are now such a dependent world that has forgotten that long term food storage was very normal only a few generations ago and still happens in some parts of the world. Being a prepper these days makes perfect sense with the world as it is. Good on him.

It’s the Ant and the Grasshopper, and most are the grasshopper. Storing food and supplies was commonplace before the advent of the modern grocery store and “just in time” supply chain. People had large pantries, canned vegetables they grew themselves, hunted and fished. This is just the modern equivalent of a prior generation’s mindset.

It's not prepping to store 6 months of food. In the northern hemisphere, this is what people did for thousands of years to carry them from season to season. It's only in the past several decades with the globalisation of supply chains that we haven't needed to. Chilli powder, cumin seeds, mustard seeds? Always a kilogram packet! My husband took 5 years to get around to this way of shopping! Now, he doesn’t bat an eyelid! It’s 24th December today, we haven’t got to step out to buy anything for Christmas holidays, it’s been bought 4 days ago, including bread and milk! I started after the Brexit referendum with things that I knew we imported from the EU to buffer myself against price rises. I didn't have to worry about getting stuff during lockdown. I continued as I saw the steady rise in prices - a bit extra every week and this has saved me a fortune, especially on pet food. I've covered my bases for power cuts with torches, batteries, candles, camping stove and gas canisters and bought extra blankets etc so that I can cut back/out my heating costs. I look at it as an investment - the money I save by buying it now as against say, next year is more than the interest I would gain by leaving that money in the bank.

My families been doing stockpiling for decades since 2000, were fortunate enough. They go out every month therefore get a months worth. But for bread, milk and vegetables it's every 2 weeks or so. If u have a little money and can stock a little for a rainy day or when it's cold, ur sick, and can't leave ur house at least u won't starve to death.

I think being prepared is perfectly sensible! Whether through loss of income, illness or war, having enough food, household supplies and money to get by for a few months or so is very wise. Also learning how to get by on less is a good skill to learn and something our grandparents had to become good at during WW2 and times of rationing. C xxxxx

I would not call this prepping. 6 months of stock of food and proper defense in this day and age is just being ready not prepping. Now if he had 2 years of food a underground bunker and so on... I would call that prepping. Im pretty sure the United States federal government advises its citizens to have 3 months of supplies on hand. So this guy went an extra 3 months. Good on him.

Our US government doesn't suggest or advise anything. The most they ever had posted was 7 to 10 days for those in hurricane prone areas. They don't even suggest alternative forms of heating and cooking. They want us totally dependent. Those on KZbin promoting homesteading, prepping, gardening, and canning are the ones who do the advising and suggestions. We are on our own here in the US. We see what is going on in Europe and know it will spread here, too.

The United States Government does NOT advise its citizens to do anything of the sort. More than likely those that are presently effective preppers there are Mormons, and a bunch of other folk that don't realize it, but are on an FBI and Homeland Security watch list of people to be concerned about.

Very sensible! Just thought of it now - the Stock Market Crash in the 1920's - NO warning whatever!! I have a few cans and a couple bags of rice..want to food prep, bit with electric bills and rent, petrol..not much left. I think I'll try again though and go for two weeks supply - though ideally a years supply is best. But I'll pray and God will provide.

There’s nothing unusual about this, it’s what our grandparents routinely did. They had larders full of dry goods. Modern homes aren’t even built with them. We’ve been addicted to the just in time supply chain; buy more and buy often. However there were no actual shortages during covid. Just panic buying and greedy retailers refusing to ration.

"Doesn't take a lot for people to go crazy" I think he's right, so many people spend their money on things they don't really need, even if it means working all the time in a job they hate, it's hard to imagine that these people would be able to maintain their sanity with very little if the situation were to get desperate, when they seem to live like they need things that they wouldn't have access to in a desperate situation.

50+ years ago, having a house full of tools, a fully stocked pantry and basic survival skills and equipment was normal. But we have been programmed to depend on the government and rich for everything. Most people now don't even keep a days food in the kitchen let alone any tools or equipment to do basic jobs themselves. Most people now concrete over their garden rather than grow healthy food.

Without ring-pulls, they can last 100 years! I also have solar lights for every room, a battery operated short wave radio, a wind-up torch, and about 100 fully charged rechargeable AAA and AA batteries, I also have 3 spare batteries for my smartphone, and I made a point to get a flat on the top floor of a 6-story block!

It is actually instinct to store up food and supplies. It is just everyone has become so domesticated they think there will always be a full grocery store or fast-food restaurant to eat at. When a real event happens and it will people will turn on each other. The scariest part is there will be only one main food source in the cities. Humans.
