I honestly thought I was the only one who worries my book is too specific to my ideas and interests to be marketable! But then again, when I think about all of my favourite books, they generally revolve around themes and formats I wouldn't have even thought to explore - whilst there are definitely agents who look for the more tropey, commonly written narratives (which is great!), there are definitely those who love the unusual or previously unexplored! I'd say that anyone who claims it isn't marketable just hasn't seen it done yet and isn't ready to take the plunge - and who wants to put their book in the hands of someone who doesn't care enough about it? passion is contagious, and there'll be people who can't help but want to fight for it once they see your own enthusiasm and read the story you've carefully crafted!

The issue is that my brain and I have two very different opinions. 7:20 You know what, 3 AM is better than 4 AM. 9:42 You're young. Take deep breaths. 18:06 is the face of someone who's just developed grave concern for the humidex having an aneurysm. In general, feeling so good for you at the end of this. In terms of "Sway with Me", bring it on! I'm ready! (With any luck, the magazine you're with is one that presents online availability.)

When you're writing something niche it can be really hard to find comp titles too! I've got confidence that there's enough overlap between literary fans and people who like cyberpunk for the detail work that it'll be enjoyed, regardless of what happens with publishing. I have been most heavily influenced by William Gibson’s work personally! I like Neuromancer and Johnny Mnemonic. outside of writing: Cowboy Bebop (1998) is one of my all-time favs. Cyberpunk Edgerunners (2022) is also quite fun. I also like some of the video essays about “Techno-Orientalism” that I’ve seen popping up recently as I think it raises important questions about East Asian representation (and fetishization) in the cyberpunk genre. It’ll be interesting to see how the genre continues to expand, diversify and subvert itself with time because I think, compared to other genres like fantasy, it is still under-written or at least under-explored in mainstream media.
