I would add one thing before priming, wash the model in soap and warm water (but NOT too hot). There is a lubricant added to the molds to help release the model when it is finished which if it is not removed from the surface of the mini will cause issues when you are applying thinner coats with weird pooling of the paint.

For those who prime and are wanting to rush to painting ASAP, a cheap hair dryer running on a low setting works. The spray box I used to use had a hole cut in it so I could insert the hair dryer, let gravity hold it and just let it cycle on low. Fantastic if you are trying to speed paint an army to test.
@PileOBonez5 жыл бұрын
I personally use a technique for priming where I first prime the whole mini with black, then after that has dried I apply grey under an angle of about 45 degrees, followed by just a tuft of white from above for the highlights. That way, when you apply colors to it, there will already be some depth to the mini :)
@canadiangoof-ball75525 жыл бұрын
Cool idea .I'll have to try it
@bomberman72695 жыл бұрын
This is called zenithal highlighting and is a great way to establish where your shadows on the model are, it can be done effectively with either an airbrush or spray paint. As you advance in your painting it can even be used to impact your color scheme with thinner paints and the like (glazes, shades/washes, inks). This is a great video for where to start and avoid getting overwhelmed.
@MrSJPowell5 жыл бұрын
Zenithal priming is a cool method. You have to work with really thin colors to get a lot out of it, otherwise you cover everything up, but it's a good way to inform your highlights even then.

Eh, respect the blade, know what will cause it to cut you, and then if you accidentally cut yourself own it, and don't do that thing again. Not putting your finger on the edge is a good start, but this isn't a light saber, it doesn't cut on contact.
@MrSJPowell5 жыл бұрын
After re-watching that bit, yeah hacking towards your finger like that, was a bit risky. If you feel you need to stabilize the blade, you can rest your finger on the edge so long as you don't move your finger along the edge. Move that finger lengthwise along the edge, and it will get cut.

Great basic tutorial. I would say to wash the miniatures with dish soap, warm water and a toothbrush before priming. I generally do it after I clean up the mould lines because I handle it a lot but I'm sure it would be ok cleaning it first if you don't handle it too much. Which brings me to my next point. I would suggest mounting the figure using poster putty or something similiar on top of a pill bottle or anything else that you can hold comfortably. It allows for a more stable hold on the miniature and means you don't handle it as much. You won't get finger oil all over the model and you won't accidentally smear or rub any paint off in the process.

13:00 Like Matt said, it depends on the specific material whether or not you should prime before painting. From personal experience, don’t prime Bones miniatures or the Nolzur’s/Deep Cuts minis. The former get very sticky and tacky when primed (even after painting), and the latter come pre-primed in package.

1 Clean Mold Lines, 2 Wash Model, they can have Mold release and Oils still on them that will cause paint to not stick well, Bubble up or not dry correct, 3 Do any Converting you want & Filling, 4 then Prime. ... Note Use Acrylic (water based) paints and clean brushes with soap and water, make sure to rince all soap out.
@TotemoGaijin5 жыл бұрын
Do they usually just go straight to washing after removing the lines? I do gunpla, and it's usually advised to very lightly sand the parts down to give the primer more tooth. Or would that be too hard on something small and detailed like miniatures?

Just a little tip for anybody that might care. Hobby knives are basically always going to be dangerous and I hated using them so I found an alternative that I find much easier for the majority of tasks. I got a small set of metal files and a fine grit sanding sponge. Removing excess sprue parts and anything larger than a mold line is really simple with a file. Probably for the best to wear a mask rather than breathe in plastic particles though. This tip is mostly for lengthy modelling jobs like warhammer and gundam.

And every other week our art brushes go half off so you can get a whole nice set for $3-$5 depending on how many you want. We also have sets of model paints that you can use the 40% coupon on, that makes them fairly cheap. I love our arts and hobby departments.

Note! Using the edge of the blade like this has a chance to damage the mini itself. Unless you're going for bulk removal, either use the edge, or (even better) use the non beveled part of the back of the blade to scrape at the mold lines to peel them off. If you use the back of the knife remember that you're now pointing the sharp part towards you, and respect the edge of of the blade. Mini painting is better with paint blood, rather than real human blood, so be careful. This isn't a lightsaber, so it doesn't cut on contact, but it is very sharp, so it will cut you if you're careless.

Forgot one of the most important steps...washing and scrubbing the mini prior to priming. Removed any releasing agents or other material that may keep the primer and paint from adhering as well to the mini. Another step is to stick the mini to a holder (i.e. a pill bottle, a small sturdy box for larger minis, or a holder designed for painting minis) so you don’t have to hold painted areas or get as much paint on your hands.

Been painting for a while now and would suggest new painters use a base. No need to go buy a special base (although they do make them), just take an old medicine bottle, fill with something heavy (I used sand) and then some Museum Putty so they base sticks to the top. I like being able to paint the entire mini while keeping my hands clean and getting to all strange areas.

On that final line, they should have shown his old mini again. They also left out a step that might not be necessary for a board game mini, but can be useful with a plastic or metal mini straight out of the package - wash the mini with a little soap and water and let it dry fully before priming. Minis fresh out of molds MIGHT have a slight film of mold-release still on them which prevented them sticking to the mold (which can also be a problem for paint sticking to the model), and everything can seem fine until very late in the process little spots of paint can just flake and fall right off of them. It's hard to recreate all your little undertones and shading and whatnot after a little paint has flaked off. Speaking from experience. It's not a 100% necessary step, but it's never a bad idea.
