A KZbinr named ForestyForest randomly decided to do the same drive from Canmore to Tuk at the same time as Ashley and Richard. He did it in a Chevy Uplander minivan, no planning, I guess everyone is different. When you guys were stuck in Eagle Plains trying to go north he was stuck in Inuvik trying to go south. The great Canadian road trip, hope you had a good time.

We saw that! It looks like his van had already been outfitted to live in (heater etc). We’re ALWAYS jealous of the van living setups. So cozy!! You definitely don’t need to plan that trip. We just started heading north and went from there. Plug Tuk into the GPS and go 👍🏻

I love this. Them: $200k Rig, using every catchphrase term, pretending its a massive undertaking.. ForestyForest: "I got my soccer mom minivan, fatwheel bike, and gonna camp by the arctic ocean." Just goes to show you how exploited and blown out of proportion these "overland" channels really are...

Followed several of the other series & really enjoyed them. Our family loves camping & years ago in my husband’s high school/college years he spent most any of his spare time in the woods of central TX (where there were trails or not) off roading & overlanding. Now that our girls are older, we as a fam of 4, have decided to step into the world of overlanding (weekend to a week of “mild to moderate” adventures planned). We have weighed all our fam’s needs/options out there & decided on a Sequoia (we know not the typical choice in the Toyota line up of overlanding) & started looking for a used one today. As we continue on our start to our own overland adventures w/our girls, we will continue enjoying ExpeditionOverland’s content & adventures.

Make sure the main motor battery is less than 5 years old. For those times when you have overnight electricity a good electric block heater and an electric battery blanket are a must. A good set of 2 gauge jumper cables. Motor oil rated for arctic use eg. 0 W 20. Winter windshield wipers, don't leave home without them. Windshield washer fluid rated for the coldest temperatures you will face. A long handled snow brush with a good ice scraper. Tiger torch, 20 lb bottle of propane and a steel bucket. You can safely thaw out almost any frozen vehicle with them. Some cardboard pieces sized so that you can slide them in front of your radiator to control your engine temperature when it gets really cold. Good quality V Pick tires chains for both the back and front wheels. Ladder chains are good, diamond chains are better. Lock de-icer. Keep your gas tank at least half full to prevent water condensation in your tank. Don't use your parking brake in the severe cold unless you absolutely have to.

This looks like fun, nice to mix it up and do it in the winter. I'm getting the impression that Tuktoyaktuk is the preferred destination for overlanders trying to reach the Arctic Ocean over Deadhorse. The half a dozen overlanders that I met last summer in BC all went to Tuktoyaktuk. I always heard that there is a chain link fence waiting for you in Deadhorse and then a guided tour to reach the ocean. I’m curious if anyone has done both routes, and which route is more scenic? And which one you would recommend? Cheers from Vancouver.
