Prepping To Paint My Garage Door - Sanding Crenelated Metal

Getting my metal door ready for new paint has been challenging because of its crenelation pattern simulating wood grain. Of particular difficulty has been sanding the indentations in the "nooks and crannies" to even out the remaining paint/no paint surfaces. Here's my (perhaps) novel solution to making a tedious hand sanding just a bit easier.

they actually already make sanders with sponges like that . surfprep or mirkodeos brand

I used a 3200 psi pressure washer and blew the paint right off down to metal. Easiest way to get er done

Can I ask someone what crenellations means? I’m getting ready to redo my aluminum garage door and could use some help with the small rust spots and the sanding part?

Lots of "nooks and crannies" just like the English muffin sales pitch. The dips and bumps makes it difficult to sand the entire surface.

I would use heavy grit scotch bright stripping pads.

And we waited to see the actual sanding to see the effectiveness but no!

That's because it doesn't work at all. It just takes the paint off the tops of the crenellation ridges and doesn't touch the valleys.

@@otd80 Thanks for the clarification. A very common problem with very few solutions it seems. Chemical stripping seems to work and possibly high pressure spray but haven’t seen any videos of that. Thanks for sharing your experience.
