I was fortunate enough to join John as he burned off his native grasses. A mix of prairie grass and switch grass that has a thick layer of dead grass also called mat. Small animals such as rabbit, turkey and pheasant chicks just can't maneuver in the thick mat and deer don't like to bed in it. There is alternatives like mowing but nothing beats a good burn off just like when lightning used to set fires in western prairies. Some of this grass is 20 years old and with fire breaks in place, good weather and a professional wild lands fire coordinator the day was boring! Which is a good thing.
