In honour of Orange Shirt Day and the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, we are proud to share this wonderful performance by Inuit throat singer duo PIQSIQ, originally aired on the Chan Centre Dot Com series in 2020.
A piqsiq is a natural phenomenon, a wind storm that conjures the impression of snow falling back up towards the sky. For sisters Inuksuk Mackay and Tiffany Ayalik, this chaotically beautiful northern image encapsulates the joys and struggles of navigating mixed Indigeneity in a world where reclaiming one’s culture can be a radical act. As PIQSIQ, the acclaimed Inuit throat-singing duo perform both ancient songs and new compositions infused with haunting beauty and entrancing melodies.

i've been coming back to this video on and off since it dropped, the haunting and ethereal singing in the beginning is nothing short of enthralling. the way they imitate the arctic ocean wildlife is so impressive and reminds me of home. you're on this otherworldly journey the whole time, and then the love song hits you like a sack of bricks to the face! first time i heard it i sobbed, like fully heaving tears snot all of it. because that's the point! the love for the worlds haunting beauty is both completed and eclipsed by love that people have for eachother

If you are here from TikTok, The Love Song begins at 49:04 but I highly recommend watching the whole thing.

7:10 despite being only voices with pretty minimal effects, it feels almost unearthly. Mesmerizing.
