Preserve the Story of the US Navy Destroyer Sailor with the restoration of the USS Joseph P. Kennedy Jr DD-850 as the National Destroyer Memorial and Museum.
Some 60 years after the Cuban Missile Crisis, one destroyer exists as the National Destroyer Memorial and Museum to tell the story of the US Navy Tin Can Sailor. Produced by a Tin Can Sailor who served on the USS Samuel B. Roberts DD-823, Tom Zwemke (TZ Productions LLC) presents this video of the experiences of a US Navy Tin Can Sailor (or destroyer sailor) and the need to preserve this history through USS Joseph P. Kennedy Jr DD-850.
Please consider supporting this effort today. For those who may wish to send a check, please make it out to USS Massachusetts Memorial Committee with JPK fundraiser notated in the memo field. Please mail this to ATTN: Rich Angelini, Battleship Cove, 5 Water St, Fall River, MA 02721

My father served on destroyers during WWII and Korea. In his later years he belonged to Tin Can Sailors and was a docent on the Joseph P. Kennedy. He was very proud of his service.

In 1962 while aboard the USS Brush DD-745, we were escorting an Aircraft Carrier. We had rudder problems had to go into Dry-Dock in Sasebo, Japan. Upon completion of repairs we got underway for our Home Port of Long Beach, Calif. We crossed the Pacific Ocean Alone. Stopped to re-fuel in Guam, Midway, Pearl Harbor finally Naval Station Long Beach. An experience I will Never Forget. A little Destroyer crossing the Vast Pacific Ocean Alone...😮

The USS HERBERT J THOMAS was a framed II ship that had been converted to a Atomic Biological, Chemical or an ABC ship. The interior and engineering spaces were under positive air pressure, hence the different look than other destroyers

I served my two years on a sumner class Destroyer then several more years on DE, CG, T-AG and CV class vessels then a tour in the Pentagon. Following this I want to SERE training and completed the Naval Aircrew syllabus. As a Naval Aircrew I saw much more of the world than I ever did on a ship and it wasn't just port call locations, which were pretty much the same everywhere and only the languages changed. My aircraft was an EC-130 and it was just glorious and I didn't have to leave my wife and children for months at a time or even years on occasion.
