Did you know that you can blanch the pears like peaches to easily remove the peals? Put the pears in simmering hot water, for about 30 or so seconds. Remove pears and put them in a large bowl of cold tap water. No ice is needed. Then rub the pear and the peals will come off. Much safer, also.

I 100% didn’t know I could do this! Another thing to try when I get into the second box!

@@thecitysteadkitchen Works best when the pear is yellow, no green tint. This is for Bartlett pears.

@@thecitysteadkitchen definitely try it!!! I did it this year and it was amazing. I bought a blanching basket off Amazon and it was a game changer.

Pears are so good. I chopped a pear up and put it on my oatmeal and sprinkled it with roasted salted pepitas for breakfast yesterday. So delicious. No need to add sugar to oatmeal. Just add fruit. I want to can pears.

Totally agree, no sugar needed at all! I love banana or apples with oatmeal as well.

Your floating fruit will sink in time. I was raised in the boondocks of Appalachia and we kinda saved the canned fruit for the first 3 months of the new year as everyone thought that is when we needed the vitamins the most. (20 miles from a store)

Oh wow, that’s interesting!

Also is no problem to put pears in jars raw and pour syrup over. Don't get as mushy during processing.

Do you get any siphoning doing it that way?

very smart - if you read the fine print on the OFFICAL canning sites you do not have to peel the pears (this goes for any fruit) and you do not have to add sugar (this goes for any fruit) - we are all so use to all that sugar and the "clean" look of the fruit without the peel that many do it anyway - I never peel and never add sugar but add sweetness when I eat them (but turns out I like them better without any sweetness added)
@thecitysteadkitchen2 жыл бұрын
The second box I ordered will be ripe for canning tomorrow or the next day, I should try some without any sugar. Through research, as I understand it, canning without any sweetness makes the pear flavor dissipate in the water and makes them more bland. But in general I’m right there with you, why add sugar to fruit! The amount I put in the liquid is suppose to keep the sugar content constant to match the fruit, but I want to give plain water a try.
@yvettebennett61702 жыл бұрын
@@thecitysteadkitchen I did my peaches without sugar. I hear a lot of people use the juice of whatever they canned and drink it so none goes to waste.

@@thecitysteadkitchen when you try the plain water do just a small batch to try it (that is what I tell everybody) - I don't like sugar and to me it taste fine but like I said we get use to all that added sugar and some just don't like it - oh and by the way ... they will not win any "beauty" contests when you don't add sugar and don't peel them lol

@@jmarylastone thanks for the awesome tips! I've learned small batch when trying new things is best 😂

Where do you order your fresh pears and other fruits
@thecitysteadkitchen2 жыл бұрын
We purchase them from our local food coop, but I know other groceries stores usually sell them by the case when they’re in season. We have previous gotten them from orchard stands as well. Apples in large quantities I get from orchards and get their second quality (they’re still really great quality).

How long did you process in water bath?? Or did you pressure how long?
