The timing for the 1st way is 1&2, not 123 (in other words, half beat, half beat, whole beat). The timing for the 2nd way is 12 (half, half or whole, whole - whichever way you want to think of it).

The timing is different. The 1st one has 3 parts, the 2nd one has 2 parts. The 1st one goes 1&2 (soccer kick, step, step). The 2nd one goes 12 (soccer kick, jump out w/both feet at the same time).
