Appreciate the distinction/emphasis of "republic" which when fleshed out reveals a continuity rather than a detour at some arbitrary point. Contrary to our ubiquitous mythology, the constitution was essentially a brokerage between finance capital, led by the federalist eastern banking mercantilist faction in Hamilton, and the land-holding slave-owning anti-federalists led by Jefferson, the landed gentry of the settler colonial bourgeoisie, specifically to guard against the immediate threats of Shay's/Whiskey Rebellion populist uprisings but further to protect their newfound material power (ie property ownership/control) against what both of these factions actually feared: democracy (see: Federalist papers, Federalist 10 by Madison makes this pretty explicitly clear). Makes it doubly insane when notions of democracy are trotted out to serve what is effectively the same as the optimates dominion of the late Roman empire (the senate of course a direct homage to this rule, this was indeed the very intentional goal, senators originally nominated by state legislatures entirely with no democratic accountability), this time with guns and nukes. These people wrote this stuff so far up their own asses they knew at some level that these factions would be a problem (like, no shit lol) but assumed their personal "virtue", noblesse oblige self-evident by their property ownership and dominion over black, poor, and indigenous people, would transcend it. Turns out that isn't a thing. Oops. That federalist/antifederalist divide leads of course to the civil war but essentially remains unresolved. Definitely could have been at various points (post-civil war being one, Johnson fucking all of that up during reconstruction), but it's essentially embedded in the constitution for the reasons above, as opposed to a proportional/parliamentary system that integrates parties into the structural skeleton; that these people believed "factions" would not arise because of their supposed virtue (and in spite of arising immediately with the federalist/antifederalist camps lol), thus you get these 2 de facto load-bearing parties. But it's an elite aka bourgeois factional dispute, both parties captured entirely by corporate/finance capital, the Dems representing a more internationalist Hamiltonian federalist wing, with the Reps the more landed nationalist wing...besides it once again coming to a breaking point (in the mean time the US having secured a global empire and thus dragging down the entire earth with its insistence of literally-earth-destroying neoliberal finance capitalism else get couped/excluded from international trade) nothing new here really.
