I think the only person that could have beaten Nixon that year was RFK and he was gunned down in LA in June of that year. Humphrey made a run of it but the Southern Strategy by Nixon’s team gained them enough support to thwart Wallace and his third party bid, and that helped Nixon win. RFK might have gained more votes in the South to sway things to his side, either by an outright win in the electoral college or by winning in Congress with the most electoral college votes but not the required majority.
