You gotta admit that even President Nixon had a heart. When he first heard about the tragic accident that Senator Elect Joe Biden's wife was involved in, he did a very decent thing and made a phone call expressing his condolences. Thankfully, for history, we have this phone call - and office discussion - preserved as part of the secret White House recordings uncovered during Watergate.
Sure, Nixon might not have been the most eloquent speaker at expressing his condolences, but you gotta admit, his heart was in the right place.

I'm pretty sure there are more times during Presidents, who are better expressing empathy, sympathy, etc...away from the public domain. Nixon didn't make calls like this for political points. He was a man that genuinely cared, who just happened to be President of the United States.

If you read the book by Evan Thomas, you'll find many such moments - he was a particularly sympathetic and empathetic man, who often masqueraded as a tough man's man, which some could argue was a big source of his weakness ethically and politically. Nixon was indeed a study in contradiction, but his good and decent side was very lovely to be sure.

Biden had lost his wife and daughter, and his two sons were badly injured. Beau died of cancer a few years ago, so President Biden has had his tragedies in life. Anyway. this was in 1972 just after biden was elected and before he was sworn in. he was 30. biden only ran in 2020 because of trump's failure, he was 78 when he was elected. he overtook trump as the oldest president. i don't think age should be the focus. it's about who can do the best job. each president was under unique circumstances. it just so happened that biden would be ready and america would need him later in life than others who came before him. i think it's very positively influential that biden is an 81 year old man who's still passionate about his job. senior's shouldn't be forced to retire.

I thought it was more untoward that Nixon talked about his own electoral history. The fact that he was saying Biden was young and has his future ahead of him was just a way of comforting him. It's hard to imagine what else he could say other than expressing utter despair, which also isn't necessarily comforting to someone in grief.
