It’s so sad that the Congress has become so mean spirited. Can you imagine the speaker of the house tearing up the president’s state of the union speech ?? Congrats to the Congress. We now hate each other. What did Abraham Lincoln say ? A house divided against itself cannot stand. Do you think Biden could deliver a speech like this ??
@danielhetue69682 жыл бұрын
Nice speech he delivered just a day after Senator Russell’s death at the age of 73. How nice of Nixon visiting Russell in the hospital before his passing and sending a moment of silence before delivering a long speech.

Sadly the reason for such a warm reception is that this is not a state of the union, but rather a concession speech. Nixon is hammering the last nail into Robert Taft’s coffin. What follows in the rest of the year is the fastest lurch of the Overton Window to the Left. In short, Nixon is announcing that he is a Progressive in the same mold as Woodrow Wilson, TR, FDR and LBJ.

I don't think that the Watergate break in was necessary, Nixon had the 72 election in the bag either way.

Nixon didn't need to do Watergate AT ALL! He only lost 1 state, and DC which had a combined 17 Electoral Votes, lol. Nixon won 49 out of 50 states, 520 electoral votes, and nearly 20 million more popular votes.
@cdr861532 Жыл бұрын
Correct…..but he was paranoid. There was a lot of social problems in the early 70s, the war was dragging on, the civil rights movement was still in swing, he thought communists were taking over parts of the USA (really….a lot of GOP members say it, but he truly thought it) and I believe he was drinking heavily during that time. He became paranoid. I think that with everything going on that I mentioned above, I think it was slowly becoming too much for him. He always came across as a strong and confident man, but I think that he had a lot of demons and it was slowly driving him crazy.
@Shah-of-the-Shinebox11 ай бұрын
Nixon didn't plan the break in at Watergate and didn't tell those people to bug the offices. All he had to do was condemn the burglars and the whole affair and he more than likely could've finished his second term.

The first color videotape recorder, an Ampex model (open-reel, of course), was introduced in 1958. A small number of color videotapes from the late fifties survive. This video of the 1971 State of the Union speech should not look all blurry and smeary like this. Perhaps the master tape was stored in poor conditions or damaged somehow, or perhaps what we’re seeing reflects the master, or a copy, having been played back on dilapidated or poorly adjusted equipment.

I wonder what President Nixon thought of Bismarck? Seems he must have thought that all of this Big Government was inevitable and that he could manage our transition to a unitary state. Didn’t he realize that Bismarck only had to manage the Kaiser and not Congress and the Administrative State?
