Great speech -would not say courageous, because it felt like he stepped into a warm bath; so def not in the same league as King's mountaintop. Not sure why he keeps failing to acknowledge James Baldwin's realm of thoughts (stressing "united" at the end, but does not hesitate to mention M Robinson....

I’m not sure if you’re framing this in the right way by expecting a presidential speech to possibly be as courageous as a King speech. Two different contexts. Impossible to expect an emotional equivalent. But from a purely rhetorical perspective, this is certainly on par with the mountaintop speech. Imo

@@rjmoney9 To just state that this is on a par with the mountaintop speech without backing it up, is just an opinion: you are certainly entitled to yours. If you like, we just leave it at that. I am happy to discuss your frame, though. Barry was elected because of his eloquence, his ability to touch a nerve of hope (and a ruthless war-room that changed the dynamics in how to reach their voters). Remember who he was up against; neither Romney or McCain ever touched that nerve. In more ways than one, Barry Obama is "going to church here". This is a eulogy, so no need to be "presidential" , Barry could jam here. Aside: Obviously getting shot a day later blurs the impact of one's last speech. So please let''s just forget about rhetorical perspective; "going to church" is emotion 101. 7 Years later and my comment on Barry's lack of acknowledgement of James Baldwin still stands. My suggestion would be to listen again to Martin. And marvel at his connection to his genius, which makes him immortal, regardless of his foibles.
