President Reagan's Campaign Trip to Austin, Texas on July 25, 1984

I remember this was President Reagan's first campaign trip after the Democratic convention, when polls showed the race actually close for a short time. He visited Texas, Georgia and New Jersey.

I was there that day in Austin! I saw Reagan at a MS appearance about 3 days before he was elected in 1980 and was living in Austin when he flew in for this rally. As I recall I think they estimated his crowd in Austin around 30,000 people. At the time Texas had a Democrat Governor who gave state employees a half day off to try and pump up the numbers for Mondale's rally there but they still only had about 5,000 people. Of course the liberal Austin American Statesman had a front page full color picture of Monday's rally while they buried President Reagan's one many pages in with just black and white pics. Of course Reagan went on to win 49 states in a landslide!

I was there too - I remember thinking how much I liked what I was hearing, while my companions snickered (which was disappointing)
