Carter and Reagan never really had good feelings towards each other. They composed themselves during times like these because politics weren’t as divided and politicians were much more civilized then they are now. Even though neither of them really liked each other, they both didn’t relentlessly attack each other like how we see with Biden and Trump because politicians were held to a higher standard during those times then they are now. This is what modern day politics lacks civility. Politics has turned to one side starting cultures wars against the other and the other side trying to play dirty as well but sucks at doing it. If politicians back then acted like how they do now they wouldn’t have a career in government. Back then extremism wasn’t tolerated, we saw this with Barry Goldwater losing in a landslide to Lyndon Johnson (who’s rhetoric and gaffes are much more tame in comparison to modern politicians) and George McGovern losing in a landslide to Richard Nixon. Sadly, those days have been long gone, thank you Newt Gingrich
