I took this video on July 13th. The Presque Isle scraped the pier under the water and later returned to Duluth for Repairs

For those wondering about the previous scuff marks. The ship is 105' wide. The largest lock at the Soo - the Poe - is 110' wide. For those who don't like math, that gives you 2.5' on each side. All ships occasionally get lock rash from rubbing the sides, but the 1000-footers can be excused for maybe doing it a bit more. (edit: fixed spelling)

My mother and her two sisters were born and raised in Duluth in the early 1900's. Their father came to Duluth from Norway at the age of 16, was in the Spanish American War, worked for the railroad, married a woman born on the plains of Nebraska and built a house on the east end of the city. All three of the sisters became teachers, one taught home economics at Ordean Jr. High, one was a professor of art education in the New York city university system during the 50'-60's and my mother was an honors graduate in choral conducting and piano from Northwestern University. She became the minister of music in charge of six choirs in Milwaukee including a100 voice chancel choir for a 2,400 member Methodist church, this before the mega churches with contemporary choirs with guitars, percussion, brass and amplifiers etc. existed. I can recollect visiting Duluth as early as being 7yrs old and continued visiting until 2010. I'm now 73 and have retired to Madison, Wisconsin. We have watched the ore/grain etc. boats many times. Many fond memories! Thanks so much for your channel!

The sides of all the commercial ships have the paint scrapped away from the sides, caused by going through the locks. These ships just fit inside the locks, if you see one without these marks it is either new or never been in a lock.

That ship most likely was under control.of a harbor pilot not the captain, either he made a mistake or there was mechanical issues. I have been in the commercial fishing industry for over 25 years running vessels from 60 foot largest 195 and find it funny most people that pass judgment could not properly dock the toy boat in their bathtub.
@boataxe46053 жыл бұрын
As a fellow Captain, well said!
@shannonlowe24123 жыл бұрын
Not sure if Duluth requires all commercial ships to use the harbor pilot, but agree that there was a mechanical issue. Reading the comments very few people know about commercial shipping on The Great Lakes or they would know the scrapped paint is from going through locks.

The angle of this shot 1:10 makes it look like you could touch it, but then there’s a human wide gap, I think the ship ran the rocks at the sides of the canal, as it didn’t make direct wall contact
