Nepo is a grunfeld player and everytime magnus plays d4, nepo goes for it, but magnus going for the catalan prevents nepo playing the grunfeld. i think its magnus idea not to allow nepo to play what he is familiar with. as for magnus playing the grunfeld, i dont think he'd want to create such a double-edged position with black when he can go for more solid lines.

Ian really played well: it's incredibly draining to sit at the board for 8+ hours with adrenaline surging, having to consistently find the best move in order to hold a draw. For the first 30 moves or so, he even seemed to have the advantage, and as black at that, so to play for another _hundred_ moves without many winning chances takes immense skill. Not that Magnus played poorly: that was an endgame worthy of Capablanca.
