I get a feeling he is still a bit pissed on how the time control changed from other world championship matches to this one. Also I agree with you, it is like he is telling himself 'no person can play that precise for that long in such a tense endgame, this was a human mistake, you're human' but he doesn't believe it a bit

@@magnum4989 When Carlsen lost to Karjakin in 2016 and didn't go to the press conference afterwards, there ended up being some sort of dispute with FIDE, because according to the contract, they could have decreased his prize money by some 10 % or something. I don't know how that story ended, but unless they changed the contract since, attending the press conference is required. So did you read the current contract or are you just guessing?

Nepo is a grunfeld player and everytime magnus plays d4, nepo goes for it, but magnus going for the catalan prevents nepo playing the grunfeld. i think its magnus idea not to allow nepo to play what he is familiar with. as for magnus playing the grunfeld, i dont think he'd want to create such a double-edged position with black when he can go for more solid lines.

Ian really played well: it's incredibly draining to sit at the board for 8+ hours with adrenaline surging, having to consistently find the best move in order to hold a draw. For the first 30 moves or so, he even seemed to have the advantage, and as black at that, so to play for another _hundred_ moves without many winning chances takes immense skill. Not that Magnus played poorly: that was an endgame worthy of Capablanca.

It's a little funny how indifferently Nepo speaks, with the tone, expressions and body language. Not trying to be hostile against him or anything. I like Nepo. Just a little funny, that

Yes, it must be very difficult. However, at the end of the day, he still was hugely strong in this game, and also, things are not over yet, so we keep following what happens next.

The way he speaks is typical for a native Russian speaker, slightly more melodic than you'd expect in English. Russian is almost a "singing" language.

It's very rare like at 5:18 for magnus to not even consider a move or continuation. It was a very tense game.

Well he did play d1 instantly so that's why, but that move isn't easy to see without the engine and both Magnus and Nepo didn't see the line that the engine shows there, so like magnus said in the past: Who cares if I missed a line if my opponent missed it aswell.

The longest game on record, a tough loss for Ian, and they have to sit through a press conference!? They both look exhausted. Yikes.

The Rd1 move is just the difference to playing with or without an engine. No player would ever recognise they should sack their entire queen side to create an attack, it's not just counter intuitive, it's down right insane.

Magnus had like three minutes on his clock at that point. If he had an hour, he quite likely would have noticed it, but to spot that with three minutes to play multiple moves is nigh on impossible.
