He could’ve done a lot better when they first got married, but you have to love the way he tried to improve, he got better at listening to each child. I think he would’ve continued to try strengthen the family and be a better husband and father. That’s all we can do- keep trying to do better, strengthen our relationships as much as we can on our side of it.

I know the mother told Carrie he wanted to adopt her but they never sat down to see what Carrie wanted before he started processing paperwork. And they were still adjusting. Carrie hadn’t bonded with him yet. I think carried needed to adjust, bond with the stepfather, maybe seek counseling of being abandoned by her real father and then they could talk adoption if that’s what Carrie wanted. The stepfather shouldn’t get so offended. She’s a little girl going through a lot. She doesn’t realize how much the stepfather is doing and that he wants them to be a family. Stepfather has a temper. Needs some anger control therapy.

I used to love these when I was a kid. But as an adult, I noticed something about them: they're based on children's novels, almost none of which are read today. There are thousands of young adult novels written by Kin Platt, Fran Arick, Paul Zindel, Judy Blume, and others, half of which are forgotten. Then again, how can you blame today's kids for not wanting to read this stuff. They don't have to wait while their teenage sister hogs the phone, they don't have to have quarters for the payphone, no renting videos from the local video store, no fax machines anymore, no writing letters to your friend in another state and waiting for a reply, and mom doesn't tell her son, "No, you can't try on your sister dresses."

I was a child and teen of the 70's. I remember watching these as well and reading those books too. They made 'Are you there God, it's me Margaret' this year and I watched the movie with my 11 year old. She loved the movie. I was at first hesitant to watch the movie because I heard it was terrible and everybody was trashing it. My first thought was that they changed the book (which I adored when I was my daughter's age) to make it more like all the other young adult movies that are seen on Netflix. Imagine my surprise when the movie was EXACTLY like the book! I couldn't figure out what everyone's problem was with the movie. It was a different time for sure but I think kids today are handicapped by all the media available to them. I've watched some of the movies that are out there now and they seem so unrealistic and mean. The values we held back then seem to be values they mock today. Funny thing is my daughter felt just like Margaret so I think the media is doing a great disservice to today's youth by telling them THIS is what should be bothering you. I may be rambling...

Agreed, but this is a TV movie. Got only so much time to get the plot from start to finish.

@@ameerordimly1449 I think the movie thats what it seemed like on her imdb. She was a dancer named LIsa 🤷🏻‍♀️. But it is interesting this movie had Julie from Gimmie a Break, a dancer from Fame and little Christina Crawford. YT got me all into watching these old afterschool and weekend specials 😂 its been cool seeing how many actors i see when they were younger or at the same time as their other show

Yes they take me back too. i am 68 years old and remember the days when life was simpler- that is the time when I was happiest I would love to be a child again growing up in those times. It is so awful what has happened to this world and am glad I am not a child growing up in this era.

Total lack of concern for the kids. 2 parents who have no interest in anything other than their own happiness. I've been there!

That bear hug scene broke me. Same as my moms ex. Horrible. My mom was weak at that time and sacrificed our purity for $. Worst years of my life. Parents need to consider the kids. We are stuck in their adult decisions good or horrible. Always put ur kids first.

This is why I firmly believe if you divorce and have children you have an obligation to stay single until your children leave home. Your happiness is secondary to your childrens.

It’s really hard to blend two families especially at their ages. Rosie was at a good age. The kids get used to be with one parent and having them to themselves. So important in dating to have the kids around at times too so they get to know each other, feel comfortable, know it’s safe and still go home to separate homes.

I grew up in a war zone due to blended family. I swore when I grew up I'd never do it and I never did. It takes 2 strong grounded parents to deal with the rebellion and fighting with mixed families.
