10 years ago.. hope dude had a great last adventure! That boat shape looks perfect for solar - is there more information on it? With 10 years of technological advancement this should be pretty sweet today.

Yes, he made it all the way through the Great Loop. Jim Greer is the owner and adventurer of the RA solar electric boat. The first attempt got him to the Great Lakes but a redesign was needed. So back to Florida for the newer RA which became the redesign of the boat you see here. We at mogcanalboat.com wrote a brief article on our blog of Thursday, December 21, 2017 that may shed more light on his most noteworthy accomplishment mognavy.blogspot.com/. He is planning another Loop.

I had the Pleasure to work on the boat doing repairs, riding on it behind Ocean City NJ and operating Ham Radio from the Ra. while it was in South Jersey last week on it's return trip to Florida. Very Cool Boat. I love to do ARRL Ham Radio Field day from the boat HF (Shortwave and VHF/UHF).

I heard this boat does about 5 mph as typical continuous cruise speed. What's the displacement of this boat? Waterline length and beam (central hull)? Basic underwater hull geometry (flat, round or V bottom? rocker? stern design? draft?) I'm asking because such information can help to better understand the efficiency of solar-electric propulsion (solar peak power, Torqueedo engines).
@TC-yx1qt4 жыл бұрын
I was on the boat for six weeks.. on calmer no current.. 5mpg was just about full speed.. super slow.. I think it was 48' Try to contact him directly..

It may surprise some of you, but not all "old sailors" are perverts. But there may be a few in the comments section. I have 3 well adjusted daughters (25, 35 and 45 years of age, plus 2 grandsons) and only once did I have to threaten the loss of some punk's "testicular fortitude" to straighten the young man out. And he intelligently weighed the situation (and a case of 223 copper clad NATO rounds) and he intelligently decided to keep the family jewels and "go fishing" elsewhere. You'd be surprised how many "crusty" old sailors will defend a young lady's honor (to the death), especially the fathers of wonderful daughters. That's not to say that there aren't a few perverts out there, but let's not judge so hastily. Hopefully, the young ladies will learn to navigate inland waterways (the "rules of the road" can get complicated in large rivers), and learn how to stand a proper helm watch and identify the navigational markers (buoys, etc.) passing them correctly, and maybe even learn some mechanical and electrical work, to boot. That said, I do hope the young ladies were properly trained in the art of landing a swift kick to the hangy-down parts of a pervert, if the need should arise.

I came here to see the boat (which it's awesome) but I have a bit off-topic question from 1:50 to 2:40 the girl in the background has some sort of headband-tie thingy, what is that apparel called? (I am not familiar with it but it looks cool)
@rolling6ballzon6ixxxx37 жыл бұрын
dc2008242 it's a bandana
@seikibrian86417 жыл бұрын
+ Animation GenerationZ -- The girl with the bandana isn't wearing it as a "headband-tie thingy" -- she's wearing it as a neckerchief. Obviously dc2008242 is talking about the other girl, who is wearing a leather headband.
@seikibrian86417 жыл бұрын
+ dc2008242 -- It called a leather dangle headband, and there are many variations and styles of wear. It's a design that became popular among the hippies back in my day, and is supposedly a link to a pseudo "American Indian" heritage. You can see one here: www.amazon.com/Braided-Leather-Feather-Dangle-Headband/dp/B003HE89NG

Is the solar panels regular or marine? great job.
@RedemptionReady8 жыл бұрын
There's no difference. Panels are designed to sit outside untouched for 20-30 years so there made from materials that last and don't corrode.
@Ihaveausernametoo7 жыл бұрын
S/V Redemption, not in wattage, but marine panels are paper thin and made to walk on. Big difference. Doesn't seem to be an issue here though with such a large boat, plenty of space. But regular solar panel are really fragile if you would drop something on them for example. Also connections might be difficult to get really waterproof, which would be important in case of really bad weather.
@johnnyosborn53589 жыл бұрын
d you add more powerful motors and a few panels as well as a few more batteries to make it a little more fast and able to cruise at night? Maybe a couple wind turbines things to power the lights for night cruising and to help charge the batteries as well as phones and such.. Is the boats design for sale and if so where can we find it. I am hoping to have something like this to travel from Texas to Florida and out into the Caribbean. I love this design, You are a truly crafty fella.

@johnnyosborn53589 жыл бұрын
Will do,Thanks. I've watched several solar powered boats and eventually that might be the way to go but I'd like to have something like RA but with a couple 200hp outboards for when I need or want to get away or somewhere in bit quicker. I'd go solar most of the time but like to have the peace of mind.

@seikibrian86417 жыл бұрын
"An experimental solar powered boat named "RA", is traveling the Inter Coastal Waterway..." * Intracoastal Waterway, not Intercoastal Waterway. The prefix "intra-" means "within" or "part of," whereas "inter-" means "between." The Mississippi River is "between" the coasts (Atlantic and Pacific); the Intracoastal Waterway is "part of" the coast (Atlantic and Gulf of Mexico).
