I honestly think it dove into the perspective of how Americans are. The guy who took his photo saw him as a trend, his roommates although tried, had a sense of higher being than him since they already been Americanized. Lin was treating him like a school project nothing but curiosity. None of of his interactions ever felt genuine. The woman from the Colombia was the only one I felt had any real connection with him.

That's a really great take. The American's he interacted with saw him mostly as a novelty that could be rejected with ease and the one person who he connects with was the Colombian woman but she ends up rejecting him as well in favor of looking out for herself. Great subtle commentary on America as a whole.

The relationship between Ulysses and Lin ended because Ulysses realized that she is only taking interest in him as a subject of curiosity. She is interested in him bc she finds him amusing. Thats why she is telling her friends about him and tells him she wants him to go to a party her friends so she could exhibit him and thus making her a more interesting person.

Hi! I really enjoyed hearing your views on the film. But I think you may have missed some key elements about the political context of the story that this films portrays, which are important to understand what's going on. During the film, specifically during the scenes of the radio station, we hear some "official messages" of the government given my the former president of Mexico Felipe Calderón, whose well know for having begun the "War against drugs" in Mexico, which was basically a military intervention to fight Narcos throughout mexican territory. This strategy was highly critiziced because violence not only did not diminish but it actually escalated during those years. Some practices that emerged during those violent years was the recruitment of really young man, essentially kids, into drug cartels. In the film we see this phenomenon, kids with big guns that ride a truck are not members of a gang, they are young "sicarios", members of a drug cartel. At one moment we see these little kids kidnapping Ulises and his older friend, threatening them with guns while "inviting" the to go work with them and teasing them about their way of dressing. In another scene we see one young sicario invading Ulises gang territory at the outside of a school. While Ulises and his gang decide not to fight back, the "Pelones", a gang of older guys, decide to defend their territory and go kill the sicario kid. We know of this from a conversation that Ulises has with the Pelone's leader afterwards. Finally, the sicarios respond to the atack by killing many members of the Pelones gang, while lying on the floor on of them accuses Ulises of working along the sicarios because he sees the radio that Ulises has in his hand. Those radios are a symbol of drug cartels. In every Narcos movie or serie you'll see sicarios and drug lords using radios to communicate. Ulises being in possession of this radio suggests that he has become one of them, and the Pelones threat him to kill him and his family for his treason. So Ulises is forced to migrate to the US because he fears for his life. But surprisingly, or not, when he's deported back to Mexico he finds out that everything has changed, he's a nobody, the subculture that was so identifying to him is extinct, also there are no more Pelones around. But these drastical changes are not due just to time passing by! They're due to the effects of drug cartels presence in the zone. Drug cartels hegemonic power traduces also to culture. Sicarios are not only criminals, they have a culture of their own. The Narcoculture is a totalitarian set of values and practices that forces itself on poor communities through violence. Ulises was aware of the changes that were going on while he was away, he notices how his friends are changing bands and joining the sicarios while he's in New York because he sees their publications on Fotolog. They now post pictures of weed leafs and of them holding long weapons. Later when he comes back he assists to a friend's funeral, and one of his friends gives a speech while shooting to the sky. Those kids are different from the friends he left that only cared about collecting music, singing and dancing... All the topics that you identify and comment on are connected with this other aspect of the story, the political context in which everything take place. This film explores the impact of Cartels presence on youth and culture, and also addresses the recent phenomenon of people migrating to the US from Mexico due to escalating violence related to cartels and military intervention...

Can't thank you enough for the super detailed explanation of what was going on. The political aspect paints the whole backdrop of the story in a really understandable and meaningful light. Whether its the narcos or the government Ulises and his friends end up in many ways products of selfish systems. This pattern repeats itself across time and places in the world. With the information you gave, it highlights even more how quietly powerful the movie is. Thanks again!

Thank you for adding all of that context, that was what I went on youtube in search for. I didn't understand why the Pelones member was accusing Ulises while they were bleeding out dying. I experienced a lot of culture shock watching the film and navigating through that to catch everything that was happening was difficult.

Something important I saw from the Guillermo del Toro and Alfonso Cuaron review of the movie (also on Netflix) is that it makes the viewer expect a lot of things to happen but the main character does not take any of those possible routes, instead he does realistic and truthful things to his character like telling Lin he's tired or refusing to adapt to a new place or people or music.

Good take on the movie, guys. So I speak Spanish, and I'm latin -american (Costa Rica). I had to turn on subtitles because although we're all latinos, mexican culture, and especially this urban tribe, is so unique, they use a lot of words I don't quite recognize when spoken. But yeah, at the same time, the fact that I'm a native Spanish speaker does enrich the experience a whole lot! The movie made me appreciate this culture of slowed-down cumbia and dancing and it has a really humane tone. I felt like I was watching an anthropology documentary of sorts... so realistic (for the most part) and captivating...! Anyway, great podcast. Subbed.

This movie is legendary. Period.. 💯 takes you into another world and then drops you into a familiar place for me (myself) being a New Yorker realizing not only being latino but how all walks of life comes from parts unknown &.. It's awesome. What I thought was amazing & heart breaking is the fact how he was holding on to something he loved so much as well as his own character for so long in New York missing his friends & lifestyle. Only to come home & realize when he got home that everything from the culture & dancing era to be semi dead & gone his friends changed people had guns & gangs grew bigger many things changed on forward. & it shows you how as you grow old things change. also what I like about this story is that yes they don't show much Mexican story lines in ( New York ).. & it is always mostly TX or L.A. based.. When in fact there are many Mexicans also in NY & he was on Myspace so the timeline was def about 2009 - 2011.. The music they loved gave me flashbacks to me & my friends listening to the Asap Mob in early 2011 also with the slowed down chopped & screws music with Huston Trill.

The movie is placed in 2010 or 2011 ... a dark period in Monterrey, Mexico where we were immersed in a drug war between the government and the cartels and affected us all, but mostly the poorest who were the ones who were used to sell the drugs or block the streets to make fuss.

I just watched this film last night. I completely missed it when it came out. I am Puerto Rican/Dominican who grew up partially in NYC and mostly in LA, so the language and some of the issues were much more accessible than I think other viewers who don’t speak Spanish or know Latnix/Chicanx culture. The film brought a great focus on a subculture in Monterrey. It was like I was watching Beat Street or the documentary Wild Style at times. Young youth culture expressing itself in difficult circumstances. I liked the chopped and screwed comparison and was thinking the same thing. Great review, but yeah I agree with what was said that if you understand Spanish (and more exposure to the culture) you may have received a greater appreciation for the film and it may not be as disorienting. Great review 👍🏽

If your Latino or from queens that makes a lot of sense that he would find himself there. When people say New York City is the melting pot of the world it’s pretty much Flushing Jackson Heights/Corona which are all located in Queens NY. Literally in a few short blocks you’re fine dozens if not hundreds of different languages spoken. He was conscripted into the local cartel foot soldiers as a spotter “halcón”. These guys have radios and help to notify the dealers of police movement or rival gangs approaching. His brother was a cartel foot soldier but was arrested. Now the foot soldiers are after him as their numbers are dwindling from death or arrest. Their “bunker” or stash house gets hit and Ulises is blamed of complicity. There was no misunderstanding, to foot soldiers he didn’t do his job of halcón and now he is going to pay.

There is alot lost in translation. They speak a Version of Calo. Calo a Spanish slang spoken by Mexican/Chicano pachucos (zoot suiters). There is one word used that stuck out (no pun intended). “Verga” is used a lot as in “Que verga!” Meaning “that’s great”Lin picks on this start using it. Like “ooo that’s verga!” In a store. Ulises shh.. her. “Verga” actually means “cock”. It’s a word you would use around friends but not around adults or strangers. A common Calo expression is “No Vale Verga!” Meaning “it’s worthless “ literal translation is “not worth a cock”. I was surprised how much Calo was spoken it originated early 40’s American south west. You’ll hear a lot of it spoken in the movie Zoot Suit. .kzbin.info/www/bejne/op6tq5acoM1-jZo
