SHREDDING & MELTING 1615 Aluminium CANS!

In this video i'm shredding and melting 1615 empty soda cans to see how much aluminum you can get from them.
This is only an experiment.
I do not recommend this to do yourself because the cost of melting the cans would outweigh the profit.

And then I melt them and pour the molten aluminium to form ingots... I repeat this process with all the crushed aluminium... Then , as you know that there is some slag left in every batch.. so I collect all the slag and try my luck on that, hoping I get some aluminium out of that too.. I turn them to ingots too!

Nice video, however, for optimal processing it could be optimized in many ways. I think you just enjoyed it, made a video hoping for many clicks. As a layman, I would assume, if you hammered the chips into the crucible, you could've squeezed out more air resulting less AlO2.

Recently in a video a Russian guy used equal parts table salt and baking soda (about 1 table spoon each per kg of aluminum) as flux, to dry up the slug and oxides, so that "foamy" stuff that's being scraped off contains less aluminum, and the ingot doesn't have any bubbles, so is ready for machining right away.

Filling the crucible with shredded cans will fit like 200 cans at once. When you don’t shred them you can hardly fit 20 of them. It will take an entire day, or even 2 days to melt that amount of cans when you don’t shred them.

When he is removing the slag from the crucible, how can he separate it from the molten aluminum? How does he know what to scoop out?
@alexisgrunden1556
@alexisgrunden1556 3 жыл бұрын
Dirt and such often float to the surface of the molten metal; it might be in a liquid state, but it's still metal and pretty molecularly dense. Pretty much you just skim all the scum off, like making bone broth. I've most often seen a slotted stainless steel spoon used for stirring and slag scooping, since steel has a much higher melting point than aluminum. Never tap the slag out onto anything you wouldn't want scorched; a cinderblock works nicely for that (non-flammable and portable).

I’m a little old man and can’t remember the numbers. I’m curious. What what was the total weight you started with and what was the total weight of the ingots? Or rather, what was the percentage of loss? I have a 55 gal barrel of tightly crushed cans and want to melt and cast them for an art project. I’m curious about the loss so I know if I have enough metal. I also have a feed sack of copper and brass. Do you know what would happen if I mixed them around 75/25? Will I get a slight copper color? 🙏
