Hey Cynthia, I have used a pressure cooker before, grew up with one, but the canning side will be totally new for sure, will be able to put uo some of the things that I have not been willing to do by waterbathing before, like Spaghetti sauce in jar rather than the freezer, potatoes and some other things I am really looking forward to trying.

That’s a great size. The PC my mum has had all my life has the pressure weights no gauge. I’ve borked getting one because of the prices🍺🍺

I'd normally wait to share it until I got it in my hot little hands but, with the dollar the way it is right now figured better to let people know, for exactly that reason the cost here in Australia. Terrie uses hers both as a canner and a cooker for big batches.

Hi Darren, I’m new to pressure canning and have this presto canner. I have read that with the gauge canners that you have to have the gauge checked before use and every year after that. I have never used mine as I have no idea where in Australia we can get these checked. Have you heard of this or know where abouts to get them checked? Thanks

Unfortunately that is not an option that is open to us, it is normally conducted by the extension offices of the universities in the States but certainly does not need to be done yearly. It is generally done when you buy a second hand unit. For a new one you have to rely on the manufacturers quality testing that it is going to be right, from there you will have a fair idea of where you need to set you burner temperature when you use the Canner, should that change then you have an issue. Generally the gauges are pretty accurate, I have seen people posting in Rebel Canners FB group that they had a 50 year old secondhand canner tested and it was within 1 psi of the guage. Sorry wish I could give you a place but we are definitely on the back foot here when it comes to canners

We use a totally different electrical system over here and the electric ones are not available or usable in Australia at this time. I know the system as I am a moderator on Rebel Canners on Facebook but there is a question of will it ever be available to Australia. That is part of the reason I got the adjustable weight as you can listen to the sound instead of having to watch a gauge.

Hey Darren, it's canning jars that I'm having a problem finding in Australia. The pint and quart sized Ball brand type ones. Where will you get yours from?
@DownunderFarmandForge
@DownunderFarmandForge Жыл бұрын
Try Aussie mason jars, just be careful of the lids with acidic products, I wouldn’t keep muck over 12 months. Ball lids, Superb or even better Harvest Guard or Tattler lids on them. I have a couple videos with canning jars in them.

@@DownunderFarmandForge apparently you can use Fowler’s Vacola jars for pressure canning. They use stainless steel lids, and they can be reused, ( not recommended) but people do successfully 🙂.
@DownunderFarmandForge
@DownunderFarmandForge Жыл бұрын
@@sharonmayer4836 I have heard the same and that you need to replace seals each time when you do it, but it is against the manufacturer rules which is what I was pointing out. Heck I moderate a rebel canning group so always trying new things, just it is expensive to buy in and try with Fowlers at current prices, the again Ball are still rare in most shops here too.

The standard weight is designed to just sit there as you watch the gauge, it’s a heavier weight to manage all pressures. The rocking style weight is an after market design that is commonly used.
