Introduces the concept and examples of pressure vessels, giving a nod to the importance of the ASME code. Then dives in to deriving and comparing the hoop and longitudinal stress formulas based on basic pressure, wall thickness, and stress assumptions.

How to check the Pressure vessel integrity for the ‘full vacuum’ condition of 1 bar external pressure? May you please answer this question.

I'm probably wrong, but isn't the surface area of a sphere = 4*π * r2 and the area of each 1/2 sphere = 2πr2?

Nope, you're right, but to find the force for the stress *normal to the plane of the cross-section of the tube*, one only needs to calculate the area of the fluid in the plane of the cross-section of the tube, not the force on the entire half-sphere. The forces on the entire half-sphere a) are in a variety of directions and b) the ones that aren't along the axis (any in y or z) all cancel each other out, leaving only those in x, and those are only normal to that x-sectional plane. I hope that helps. Thanks for watching and commenting!

id like to make a rectangular pressure vessel to hold 60 PSI measuring L=8.25 ' W=4.5' H=1' but am uncertain if this concept is possible. This vessel will not have heat applied and is for casting purposes. any thoughts?

ep5tv is pretty much dead-on. If you're still set on it, research all the rectangular pressure vessels you can find. You may decide to change your strategy.

Yes, it is SolidWorks, also using the stress calculator that can come with it. I highly recommend SolidWorks, but it can be a bit pricey.

ok....longitudinal stress is 1/2 of the hoop stress. Clearly that is the case since pressure vessels rupture along the axis of symmetry. Ok got that...now why exactly a sphere is a better engineering solution? For given pressure it induces 2x as much stress in the hoop direction than the axial direction. If anything the conclusion should be: a cylinder is a great variation of sphere and the axial stress is less than the hoop stress, which is quite fortunate. BTW...wouldn't you ant to calculate a combined Von Messes stress? I mean...you are stretched in Y and -Y and also X and -X (only 50% less). Still...shouldn't that add up to a resulting means tress which is a sum of the two directions?

A sphere is better because it has no hoop stress, thus it will be twice as strong for the same pressure AND it is the most efficient shape in terms of surface area:volume. A Von Mises stress calcaluation would be a great next step. However, that's not covered in this particular course. I'd love to, but I run out of time! Thanks for watching and commenting!
