What does it mean to "OWN YOUR MASTERS"? A master recording is the official and original recording of a song, sound or performance. Also referred to as "masters", it is the source from which all the later copies are made. This is Part Two of my session with E.Z. Cin, who is a talented songwriter, composer & guitarist who had several questions about copyright, master recordings, split sheets, music publishing and more. In this video, I discuss counter claiming copyright takedown notices, how to secure and own your master sound recordings, having all of your paperwork in order including split sheets, an artist manager's roles in the music business, getting electronic signatures and more. Check out the video and make sure you Like the video. Leave your feedback and thoughts in the comment section below and make sure you subscribe to the channel if you haven't already. Thank you for uploading such an informative video. Can I ask, for a songwriter, how best do you go around copyrighting the lyrics & master recording? Is it still owned by them if recorded in another person's studio? Can they leave with the recording, and its theirs alone, or is it best to have something in writing?

I’m pretty sure as long as you’re registered with ascap and all that n own everything then if you pay for studio time they don’t own the master recoding just cuz u recorded it there. Cuz u paid for the service to use the studio to record. If they made the beat that’s a different, u have to work out before hand how u are purchasing the beat. Are u paying flat out or are u sharing royalties, etc.

Prince recorded EVERYTHING in his own paid for studio.. BUT Warner Bros. had ownership of his Masters.. that led to their war. & many others experienced the same thing.. So has something changed?? Because someone could record your material on their iPad.. does that stop it from being yours if you are the writer, and you produced the beats, wrote the lyrics??

So is the master recording the original recording before all the mixing and finished version?

So, Her voice rapped them lyrics that were written by Aleem . MEANING Aleem written rap vs completed music that she rapped making the music completed song on her laptop hmmm... so her voice may come across as a composer since aleem don't have her voice but just rap on a paper? man, I'm confused .. So she owned the completed song plus the computer she recorded her vocals on with the date of the recording whilst aleem wrote on a piece on paper i'm amusing without the song been registered hmm . This is the reasons why we should use a computer to write our music, especially on G-drive with the date recorded automatically before one gives out them lyrics. My question now is what if she's a session singer does that count? or i just pay her and that's it?

Someone's voice or someone singing doesn't mean they wrote or composed the song. Whitney Houston sang Dolly Pardon's song, but Whitney was not the composer just because she sang it. If Whitney made a remix to Dolly's song and added a new and original verse, then Whitney would have a new derivative of Dolly's work, but it would be a new work/new copyright. Whitney would still owe Dolly publishing because she used Dolly's song in part or in whole. I hope that helps.

@@dayosonictv Royalties are paid to the copyright owners, songwriters/publishers. If you perform someone else's song or composition, that doesn't make you the copyright owner of that work. There's a new royalty for performers called a "Digital Performance Royalty", which is paid out by SoundExchange. That royalty would be up to the session artist to collect. I spoke about that in the video I posted before this one. Thanks for checking out the video.
