Most tropical plants like aroids are too easily propagated and grow too fast to keep stable prices. Supply easily catches up to demand. I don't think that plants will ever demand those prices like during the pandemic again, because people realized this. Even here in Switzerland where you cannot import easily, prices have dropped significantly. I find the botanical species more appealing than variegated plants and those have come down in prices significantly. I just bought a P. billetiae for not much more than a standard Monstera deliciosa of similar size. Atabapoense is still slightly more expensive. Most other non hybrids are in that range too. Spiritus-sancti is still quite expensive but that won't last either I think.

A lot of importers have to do business with agents and intermediaries to do export from Thailand and Indonesia. By the time the plants get to your hands, it's already the same price as locally grown plants. If you engage directly the nurseries in Asia you can still get very good prices. Syngonium Orm Nagpum that got listed for THB 700 ($20) on your video are being sold everywhere in Thailand for THB 100 ($3.5)

Chris - I was coming here to give you a hard time about the "caramel" pronunciation, just so you can say someone did, but I'm gonna pivot and give you props for pronouncing "Alocasia" right for an entire video. Nicely done! 👏😉 On a more serious note, I'm curious about your importing - do you do most of it on Ebay? I wonder about the prices you see on there because they aren't all that great. I find the prices are still quite a bit better bringing stuff in (to Canada, at least) from Indonesia if you have a couple of good import contacts and have them source plants for you local to them. We've been bringing really nice stuff (mostly Anthuriums though) in for still quite a bit less than US/Canada prices. We're doing group orders of 10-30+ plants at a time, but I think that discounting probably still equates to you buying in bulk for commercial resale.

Ahhahahaa you know imma mispronounce something 🤣 Tbh I grow most things we sell from TC or some cuttings off our mothers. Occasionally I’ll restock our mother trays with big purchase from Asia (100+ plants), and those prices are pretty good. But getting closer and closer to what is available locally. The problem I see with importing is that a lot of importers/sellers in my area will import a plant, acclimate it, propagate it and then try to sell the propagates for the same initial price they've paid or more. I mean, I understand that they need to turn in a profit but they often end up not even selling their plants because almost nobody is willing to pay >$500 around here. Then, somebody eventually buys it, propagates it and then re-sells it, driving the price down. I see this trend a lot, let's take the Monstera Mint NoID as an example because it is pretty hot at the moment. ''Rare'' plant sellers are currently trying to sell it for $500-750 and their listings have all been up for months, meaningwhile, I got a cutting from a collector for $150 and she sells all of her cuttings within days when she posts an ad (they're priced $150-$250, depending on size). I think a lot of importers are too greedy and try to gatekeep their plants at too high prices until they realize they've been outcompeted by their customers, then they just move on to the next thing. Which brings me to the next point, I don't think that importing will stop. I've been collecting for 2-3 years now and I've just started getting into importing because some of my wishlist plants are either not available in my country or they're being gatekept at high prices by sellers (not that I want one but why has the price of Caramel Marble not dropped yet?). In cases where it can be as much as 80-90% cheaper to buy from TC labs in Asia than to buy from my local sellers, the choice is clear. The fact that new hybrids, new mutations and new trends emerge mostly from Southeast Asia tells me that we'll keep importing from them for a while. Also, many prices in your videos are quite high, I recently bought a P. ''Green Congo'' for $10 + shipping from Thailand.
@prettyingreen7 ай бұрын
Great take. Essentially the rare stuff that’s been around for 4-5 years you can get cheap domestically, so no need to import. The rare varieties coming out in last 1-2 years are still worth importing because supply hasn’t caught up domestically yet. Yea and eBay prices are always high. Exporters are pricing plants for the market that pays them the most. I've been talking to a bunch of agave exporters about importing rare agave and the prices are set for the Japanese and Korean markets because that is where the agave market is the hottest. I'm stunned at the prices, but, you can't get those branded agave anywhere but the countries that make them, or by importing a single small plant from Japan where a new and hot agave was created and then grow that agave out to the point that the exporter can sell them back to Japan for resale. The US market for Asian-style agave is weak at best, but it's HOT in the Asian markets. I imagine the same goes for rare tropical plants as well. The US market is growing tired of the flipping and the "gotta have it!" mentality that was present back in the "good ole days" of tropical plant selling. Our homes are filled with plants and now there's too many of them, and that need to collect them all has grown tiresome. The agave markets in Asia will have the same awakening in the future, but they're not there yet. Tropical plants aren't dead in the states, but there is collector fatigue taking over.
@cactsai7 ай бұрын
Sorry, I forgot to mention, the tropical plant boom is just getting started in Japan. They've been around a long time, but the desert plant fad (agave, caudex, cactus) is slowly cooling off, and tropical plants are becoming more popular there. I follow a lot of Japanese and Korean accounts on social media and I'm surprised at how I'm seeing more and more tropical plants popping up in their collections. Thailand and Indonesia are likely seeing this increase in interest and are pricing their plants accordingly to cater to that newer market. The US is slowly becoming second tier to the Japanese and Korean markets.

You're comparing buying single plants domestically to importing single plants. No one is or was ever able to create a sustainable business model importing one plant at a time. The shipping cost is usually cost prohibitive. If you're trying to leverage geo-arbitrage you're importing a dozen or more plants at once to reduce the shipping/phyto/fixed cost per plant. I don't feel it's fair to compare one-off purchases. Importing is NOT dead. You're doing it wrong. Sorry you're mad at the import system. But telling people to get the fuck out is not going to up your own hustle. That said, I appreciate the clickbait value of these kinds of smackdown content titles and the impact that can have on one's sales. Not to mention riding Harry's coattails. Importing single plants from ebay is NOT the move and never has been. Hopefully whoever is and has been doing that keeps doing that and the rest take your advice. Makes it easier for the rest of us if people just throw up their hands and bail. Good job snuffing the comp. Just saying, importing is not simply about finding the cheapest single plant that you can. It's about hustling to locate reliable sources and establishing good channels and systems for moving plants from point A to B. And scaling your acquisitions to best leverage geo-arbitrage. Buying single plants doesn't achieve that. I also feel like you don't even mention the other major reason, aside from price, that people import. New shit. So yeah, fuck off all of you who don't want new shit and are ok with you PPP and big box Thai Cons. But if you want any of the new Flobe hybrids coming out, a variegated atabapoense, any number of the newer var monstera variants, [insert the new flavor of the day plant]. Sure, you can get these plants eventually (and many of the ones I mentioned are already stateside). But if you miss the initial window of when the new shit drops, you miss a big opportunity as a seller. So to say importing is dead sounds a little facile. It's dead if you don't give a fuck about saving money and find cool new plants that most of the community doesn't yet have. I totally appreciate your content. Respect. I've watched you for a minute now. However, imo this video simplifies the dynamic constellation of metrics that goes into acquisition and cost of plants. Apples and oranges. Much love and happy planting all!
@prettyingreen7 ай бұрын
Valid opinion. I agree on some parts. Getting new imports on all the new Florida beauty hybrids, yes you need those from Asia (that’s where they’re being hybridized). But as the “click bait” title suggests, and the examples I gave, importing var Alocasia, var monstera (Aurea, albo, Thai), and most var philodendron, the difference between the domestic price and the import price is marginal. I’m also not “riding” Harry’s coat Tails. He had good plants, was kind to have me over. Idgaf about whatever you might be alluding to. And I compared retail domestic single plant purchases to retail import single plant purchases. It’s apples to apples. I could have done 100pcs import albo monstera, vs 100pcs domestic albo monstera, but those metrics, prices, and photos aren’t readily available. I appreciate you watching the vids for a long time, but I’m not trying to “snuff” out the competition. If you want regular variegated plants (not the new shit) but domestically. Buy out someone leaving the industry. Prices are CHEAP. If you want the new new from Thailand, you need to go to Thailand. The flipping of 2019-2023 is OVER (wit the exception of 20-100 new species coming out of Asia). Now that would have been a better title 👍
@FloraLoco7 ай бұрын
