The ruler compresses the grain thus making the wood more dense where the ruler has rubbed across the wood. This makes the wood harder in the the groove created. This is a very practical method of hardening the wood in local areas of the bridge for the strings to pass over.

This is used elsewhere too. I used to have some all-wood xc skis that had strips of compressed wood on the edges. These resisted wear from ice and rocks but didn’t stiffen the skis like metal would have.

Yes Daniel it's "parchment" in English and "parchemin" in French. It is usually goat or sheep skin. It is also used as paper (similar to vellum).

Yep. In German, it's _pergament._ I see it often in my workshop here in Vienna.

An old guitar trick I use should work with a violin bridge. For a damaged string slot, take some baking powder and fill damaged area. Then take crazy glue, one drop onto baking sofa then let it harden. You can then file if needed to contour. Afterward cut a new string slot. Saves an otherwise good bridge

We're talking wood bridge as opposed to bone nut on a guitar. I don't think baking powder would work on wood.

Thank you for this. I'm going to look for the tube. Recently, I replaced my Aubert bridge, which was bent. The old bridge had some kind of plastic or dot of glue added beneath the E string. The new bridge has nothing. Now I see that the E string is cutting into the wood a little, only a week later after I changed the bridge.

I have a small titanium triangle bridge protector on my E string. Is this good or bad?

I use a piece of worn out banjo head. Glue a tiny piece on just like parchment.

Thank you for this information. It has helped a bunch.

The problem is the E string quickly cuts through the tube. So I use parchment plus the tube.

Dear Daniel: Will you please use the CUT OPEN violin like the one you showed us at the end of the video to demonstrate HOW do you move the tool to adjust the position of the sound post ? From this video, after you put the tool inside the violin, we had no idea how to move the tool to adjust the position of the sound post. Thank You.

should a parchment or a tube be added on the e string on a brand new violin?
@AVDanielViolin6 жыл бұрын
use either one. no need to use both at the same time.

Hey, my e-string has cut into the top wood of the violin, the top of the finger board, on the "border", if that makes sense, to the "room" with the tuning pegs. I assume that's not great... how can I fix this, please? 😰
@majocasador16825 жыл бұрын
I have the same issue
@derpsydaisy52022 жыл бұрын
I am not a violin player so take this with a grain of salt. I have played guitar though. This small piece of wood between the fingerboard and the peg box is called the nut. It is made of a hard wood and should have small slots in it to keep the strings in place. I wouldn't worry unless they were worn in deep but they should be just deep enough to hold the strings.

use wax paper to pinch and hold the parchment on the e string wax wont stick to your fingers or the bridge

?
@AVDanielViolin7 жыл бұрын
parchment is only for bridges that already cut in. no need to new bridges.
@derpsydaisy52022 жыл бұрын
Keep glue from sticking to fingers. Put the wax paper between your fingers and the work you are doing.
