At 10:14 water that flows.........can freeze because of the " wind chill " . A river is still flowing under the ice. Its just that the cold outer areas of the river are exposed to the elements. Thus it freezes ( over ). Often late in the year I leave a water line to the cattle flow ( slowly ) When it gets cold enough.........mainly when its windy.......that water will freeze solid. Normally around 10 degrees......and its only because of a wind chill often below -15 degrees. Again....... the wind chill......the ability for the wind to cool things !

This is my first winter with livestock and this is the best video I have seen on keeping water from freezing. Thanks for walking through all the options. I'm in north Texas and we just had a hard freeze yesterday, Dec 6th.

I have used a brand called jug. It is energy Free uses a straw type system I used them for probably 20 years. Never ever froze. But now in my sacrifice lot, I use it's called the post drinker.... about $400 3 years ago, no concrete pad needed, works on the same principle as a frost free hydrant, sheep , cattle, goats and horses can all use it, the post is my favorite.

You should be able to use salt water to fill up the basketball, as long as you leave the ball underinflated.

Bubbler. Large bubble like a pond de icer. Is another option, as long as cost isn’t a factor. There are windmills that can do it but have to wait til the wife requests a windmill cuz as you know kaching$.

Instead of g local use alcohol. Like cheap 80 proof vodka.
