My solution is a bit different. I'm using a 19mm id hose, which ends in a jar with starsan. O.k., that's what everybody does. The trick is, that the amount of starsan is less than the volume that fits into the vertical part of the hose. In my case this is about 280cm3/ m, the vertical part of the hose is about 1m long and the amount of starsan in the jar is 200cm3. That means, when suckback occurs, the hose can only be filled by 3/4 with starsan before it starts sucking in CO2, so air or starsan will not find their way into the fermenter.

Awesome feedback. Honestly, I've moved on to pressurizable conicals, so I can just put pressure on the fermenter and not worry about it. But it sounds like a great approach.

If your first blow off tube went to the bottom of a large bottle with a one piece air lock on top, would the C02 push the oxygen out the air lock and once cold crash the fermenter suck the C02 back because C02 is heavier than oxygen? Any oxygen reverse sucked into would float on top of the C02 in the blow off bottle? Thoughts on that?

In theory yes, but oxygen and CO2 does mix over time.. it doesn't stay in distinct layers. Thanks for checking out the video!

It really seems like once the sanitizer gets pulled back into the mason jar, while it won’t then go up the tube into the carboy, it will continue to suck oxygen in from the beer bottle (once it is empty). So it seems you just created an oxygen bong for your beer. You won’t get sanitizer in your beer but you CAN get oxygen filtered through the sanitizer filled mason jar.

True, so you need to make sure you use a big enough jar. But I rely on pressurized fermenters now.

I've been thinking about brewing for a while, and now I'm living in a place where I think I can pull it off, my main worry is keeping my beer at a steady temp for the duration of the fermentation. Any tips?

It depends on your budget. The simplest way is a spare fridge/freezer and a plug in inkbird controller, like the ITC-308. Alternate to that is to put the fermenter in a location with a low ambient temp, say 60 and wrap in a blank. I like the fridge and controller the best myself, and controlling the ferm temp made the biggest difference in my brewing.

Thanks - Looks like the seller stopped selling them. I updated the link to another seller, but the same product.
