As a beekeeper, I have to disagree that Neem oil is pollinator friendly. Neem oil, in addition to being a fungicide, is an insecticide. Honey bees are insects. Now, it's true that Neem oil is not a contact killer of honey bees but anyone who can adequately spray a squash plant without getting the spray in a blossom is a genius. Forager honey bees love to collect pollen from squash blossoms. They get covered with pollen, fly back to the hive where other bees will clean the pollen from the bodies of the foragers. The pollen is used to make bee bread as food for the developing bee larvae. It is packed into the cell for the developing bee to eat. If the pollen they collect is wet with Neem oil it will kill any deveoping bees that ingest it. An entire colony can be killed in this way if enough Neem oil makes its way into the hive. Every bottle of Neem oil I have ever bought has this written on it: " WARNING - This product is toxic to honey bees. " Look for it and you will find it. Spray Neem oil very late in the day at dusk and most bees will be back in the hive for the night. In the morning the spray will be dry and the risk greatly minimized.

I read that it can be toxic to birds which is why i decided not to use it. Have decided to go with Hydrogen peroxide and i spray very late at night when all the bees and birds have gone to bed. Thank you for the info.

@@sherimetschan961 I use neem every week as a preventative measure, but I do wait until dusk or see don't see any pollinator movement to do my spraying. It hasn't stopped my pollinators from visiting at all but has helped keep other bad bugs away. I've had very few pests visit my garden, but I will have to disagree with the video that neem kills powdery mildew on contact as that has been my biggest garden issue this season. I have turned to the Sulphur to try to stop the powdery mildew, at present it is still my battle.

Congrats on your 300k Brian! You deserve it! I have something funny to tell you... I planted some new radishes a few weeks ago and they were coming up just fine... I got up one morning and they were chewed up... I sprayed them with a mixture of peppermint oil, tea tree oil and soap (that is all I had on hand) and I got up this morning and no leaves were there ...chewed to the ground! I thought, wow! What kind of bugs eat that much in one sitting? That was a lot of chewing in one night! Well, it is not a bug, I found the culprit! A ground hog is living under our shed... I just kind of put salad dressing for him/her on my radish leaves and he/she like it ...A LOT, lol. So tonight I made a concoction of a Tyland extra hot peppers slurry in water and I sprayed it all over my garden... 🙄😞... I hope that it will deter it from munching on my veggies... I don’t mind sharing but He/She is eating a bigger part of the pie. What would you do to deter the new comer? Thank you again for your videos. May the Lord keep blessing you and yours. Have a good weekend.

Nicole Hervieux I got some bugs too. Chewing everything. You go at night using a beam light and just catch them. If you have sluts put them in your compost pile or bin. They should be happy there eating kitchen scraps. I catched about 20 to 30 every night. Now my garden is almost bug free. Ja ja ja.

I (very) liberally sprinkle cayenne pepper and half the time mix in an equal amount of cheap ground black pepper. This gets spread all around the outer edge of my beds and on the ground around them. It usually does a fair job but if it rains all bets are off immediately. You know how squirrels, chipmunks and assorted other critters like groundhogs lead with their noses and they're always sniffing everything? Well, when they get a noseful of ground pepper it can be really entertaining as they jump up and down squealing and sneezing but it does, for a short time anyway, keep them away. Unfortunately when you get into a rainy period, and it gets washed away or diluted, like I just went through it's like they get their revenge and go after the garden that much more aggressively because I pissed them off. Anyway, that's my solution for the munchers.

You suggested Neem Oil some time ago and I’ve been spraying every two weeks on melons, squash and roses. Staying ahead of PM is the way to go. A method to tell if it’s PM is to 1) see if it rubs off and 2) see if it smells like mushrooms.

Drip irrigation on an automatic timer is probably the single best thing I’ve done for my garden. I have far fewer pest and disease issues and I don’t have to worry about cracking tomatoes or blossom end rot from inconsistent watering. I have a soaker hose under the mulch in the bed with my zucchini this year and so far I’ve had very little powdery mildew issues. It doesn’t hurt that that bed gets ~10 hours of sun every day as well. Congrats on 300K subs! You definitely deserve it dude!

Jig89 I live in especially hot and dry area. 100°+ for almost 3 months with no rain all summer. Right now I run it every 12 hours for 45 minutes. At the beginning of the season when it’s not as hot and the plants are still small I just run it once per day (at 4:30am) and that’s just right. I turn it off for the winter and manually turn it on as needed.

I only had powdery mildew in my garden once. It was about 20 years ago and it got my lima beans. The only things I do for fungus control are adequete spacing between plants and staking/trellising to keep plants off the ground. I also mulch heavily with grass clippings to prevent soil splashing in heavy rains.

I am growing beef steak tomatoes this season and I know you don't have to trim them back the same but I have been trimming anything thats touching the ground and also I have been thinning a lot of the branches.. I have a lot of fruit on the plant its white and turning green at this point .. hopefully they get ripe soon. but I have been thinning them back a lot to provide airflow. lost a few zucchini this week .. they were small but not maturing or getting large so i think the flower stayed on the end too long .. only lost about 3.. I am letting one of them grow as big as I can get it so I can harvest seed they are regular black beauty... I haven't watered all summer except when I transplanted for a few days... we have been getting rain 1-2 days a week.. I am trying to cut back on watering because it can get expensive.. but I am still getting a really decent harvest so far... anyway hope you are doing well.

So far tomatoes are doing fantastic, but the powdery mildew on the squash, melons, and cukes has been horrific! Too late to stake, I am pruning. I have used all the sprays you mentioned, and I'm keeping them alive, but I keep getting new outbreaks. Tell me, is it ok to combine sprays? Like hydrogen peroxide and baking soda? Or hy. per and mouthwash? Just wondering if a double whammy would be more effective. Also, is it good to add in the liquid fertilizer to the same mixture? Good preventative measure that works for me is black woven weed barrier on top of the planting bed and planting in a 2 x 2cm cut-out square. At least the 6 Hours sunlight required and not watering the leaves. Good airflow is a must. Weed barrier keeps weeds out, it prevents cats from doing their thing there, keeps moisture in and maintains good soil temperature.

I never had watery mildew or squash bugs until I moved to city. 23 yrs gardening in country in indiana with no issues. I never even knew what a squash bug was. I suspect the mildew is carried by the squash bug though I can’t prove it. In the country I had my 20 ft by 60 ft garden surrounded on 2 sides by chicken run area. I suspect that would be why I never had an issue with insects. I may have seen an occasional japense beetle, but picking those off was enough to prevent damage.

Well, this is scary. It's my first year so I have yet to see it, but now at least I know what to look for and what to do to rid the garden of it once I do see it. Thanks as always for the information!

Hi there, after watched your video, i went out sprayed my young just one and half yr old baby rose. I rooted three of them 1 1/2 years ago. My question is how frequently should I spray them for powder mildew?

Thanks for the video. I just came across it while battling a severe powdery mildew infestation in a bed of petunias that I allowed to get overgrown. I tried thinning them out and replacing ~10 plants that were too far gone, but since the mildew is back it's now time for chemical warfare! It's interesting that both baking soda and vinegar are supposed to work, since baking soda is a base and vinegar is an acid, and those are essentially exact opposites from a chemistry point of view. Strange. For now I'm going to try Neem Oil with a bit of dish soap added to make it emulsify and spread a bit better. If I knew whether vinegar or baking soda worked better I'd add one of those too, but I'll reserve that for next time. (Though I hope there isn't a next time!)

Neem oil question- I followed the link you provided on the brand you use off amazon. I can’t seem to find a shelf life on the photos in the link. Do you know how long a bottle lasts? I’m not sure if I get this larger bottle... will I be able to use it next year? I’m in Illinois. Help 🙂

We have it on our squash and cucumbers. My husband went to the store and bought something for it last week, but we had neem oil! His spray made all the blooms on the cucumbers drop. We’ll be trying the neem oil!! Thanks for more great info!

Yes! Thanks for suggesting spraying a few leaves first. I live in Texas and it’s very hot and humid and my zinnias has PM so bad. A few weeks ago I found the baking soda, dish soap and oil remedy in a completely different person’s video. Well, I sprayed all of my zinnias because the mildew was so bad! I don’t know if it’s too hot here for the oil or if the mixture was too strong but I fried them all. It’s probably the 100 degree heat here mixed with the oil. Do be careful and test a spot first. Great advice!!

@@carolhutchison222 I fried my peppers last season, i didn't shake the mixture in between spraying plants and some got too much oil. I really like using the neem oil mix and alternating with the peroxide when it gets bad. If you use any oil based sprays make sure to shake it well , and then see if the oil is truely mixed in, sometimes different dish soaps are stronger, like dawn versus an natural soap, you would need more soap if using natural.

Hello, I am a beginner gardener with my very first garden. I lover your channel and all of your detailed information. I love how you describe things in detail. I am a cancer survivor and trying my hardest to be organic, but I am really having a hard time with whiteflies in my pumpkins. They are everywhere, the leaves, the stalks/stems, and on the ground. I had given up and bought Sevin dust, but after reading more about it, I am really not wanting to use it. I enjoy the bees, and not to mention being cancer free!!!! Can you give some advise, please????

@@NextLevelGardening Thanks, I will try the Neem Oil. I am in zone 7b, North Carolina. Do I hear a slight southern drawl once in a while from you...? Not my neck of the woods, maybe Texas area? Anyway, I have learned much from your channel and enjoy watching. Thank you for helping us beginners!! I am still trying to catch up on all of your videos.

Funny you should say that. Maybe? Born and raised and lived my whole life here in S. Cal. But 3 out of 4 of my grandparents are from the south and even though my dad lived in S cal all his life people used to detect a bit of an accent. When my sister was little she had a heavy drawl..it was funny. Your the first person to say that about me but I guess to the trained ear I might have a bit of one. 😃

My first mistake was underestimating how big they got. Haha. Planted 4 in a 1 meter space. Second they don't climb. I left the leaves with white stuff, didn't know what it was. Off into my garden now to cut those leaves off right now

Perfect timing! It has been HOT and humid here. I have neem oil but never thought to add liquid fertilizer to it. Can you use more fertilizer if you used a continuous one that feeds for 3 months at planting? Totally new to this whole gardening thing and have really been enjoying it!

I'm not sure if it's powdery mildew but its white & fuzzy on my rosemary plants. I don't want to lose them! What is this white fuzz & how do I get rid of it & still be able to eat my rosemary? It happens inside the house & outside. The plants are quite large now but WV winters are not conducive to leaving them outside plus they're in 2 gal containers. I couldnt find decent plants this year when we were shopping.

I successfully staked my yellow squash and zucchini plants based on a prior video you did. I also chopped the old, diseased leaves off along the bottom. 🙂 Does the neem spray need to be done early in the morning? The bees are out here around 6:30 AM and I worry about the plants being wet and hurting the bees. Is applying at night frowned-upon?
