Voilà ! This is exactly what I was looking for. The first and foremost training. Thank you loads Victoria !!!!! You gave me a huge relief. I was so upset of not knowing what to do regarding this. After a decade, finally I have learnt how to tackle the situation. Please keep uploading as many videos as possible and boom, I can learn more and more and we can live positively together.

How do you teach a dog to stop food guarding when it's already food guarding
@k9soul12 жыл бұрын
Positive methods mean happier, relaxed dogs and owners. Win-win.
@grizzlee35811 жыл бұрын
You do exactly as she shows. You don't place the bowl on the floor - you hold it and give each bite like a treat/cookie. Placing the bowl on the ground, for some dogs, means it belongs to them and sometimes they will become aggressive in trying to guard it. by holding you're saying, "food belongs to mommy/daddy and you don't have to worry about guarding it, I'm in charge of the food distribution, so relax and eat". I can assure these techniques work.

So you're saying you have to hold the food bowl EVERY SINGLE TIME it's time to eat? Doesn't sound like it's teaching anything. *You're just avoiding the problem.*

How to prevent a TOY or Random ITEMS guarding?
@noraeaton96348 жыл бұрын
I need to teach two 5 month old pups recall, I've had dogs all my life and never had this problem. These are rescue dogs Untill a few weeks ago had never been in a home. They had lived in kennels, so no potty training/leash and never worn a collar. Both dogs very smart. One has been easy to train in most things. They other is afraid of her own shadow. If there is anyone out there with positive ideas they would be greatly appreciated.

I have a very nosy cat. She's always right at your feet when you have any type of food or treats. My 1 1/2 year old Pit Bull mix recently started showing some sort of "aggression" when the cat is around her food. She is completely fine with me touching her food, but she started snapping at the cat when she get's too close. I would love Victoria to do a dog to animal food aggression video so I can prevent actual aggression before it escalates.

Resource guarder* It means that the dog is protective, likely to the point of aggression over something like food, a treat, or a toy (sometimes their crate). They're expressing that that item is theirs and nobody else's. They think you're going to take it away, or share with out their permission, and get angry and upset. This can be against people getting near them while they're eating, or other animals; they may growl or even snap/bite if they feel threatened enough.

I did all of this. And my dog, once she turned 1, suddenly she started showing signs of guarding. It started with a price of food she took and wasn’t supposed to have and I went to take it. Then I noticed her doing it with her regular meals. I’m trying to work on it. I’ll see some improvement one day and then it’ll happen again.

Hi Victoria. I did something very similar with our dog when he was a puppy and never had any issues until she was around 6 months. She started guarding her food bowl. We started hand feeding her. It settled, then recently in the past few months it has started up again. We are back to hand feeding. Do you have a protocol with grown dogs? Our shepherd/boxer pup is now almost 16 months old. This is a long process.

Exactly what I've been doing since I or her about a month ago but my Koko, a 4 month beagle girl still growls when the food is in the feeder. She eats part of it from my hand but as I put food in the feeder she start growling. And also touching her is with the growling background. What do I do wrong?

My for terrier is already guarding his food but he does not guard it against my family or I, he guards it against the other animals in the house, can I still teach him to stop guarding it when the other animals enter the same room as his food?

Hi! I'm a positive trainer. Some people differ in their thinking on this, but I will generally allow my dogs to guard their meals and chews from one another as long as it doesn't escalate to a fight. Usually a dog will give warning signs to one another (like growling, freezing, hard eye contact) before making a move. Do not scold your dog for displaying these warnings as they are the only way the dog has of saying "I would like you to give me some space." If we give a correction for that, then the dog will generally eliminate the warning behaviors entirely, but will not hesitate to show discomfort in a different way, like biting. What you want to look out for is what the approaching dog is doing. If dog A is giving warning signs and dog B doesn't back off, then dog B should learn the "leave it" command (see Victoria's video on this). In addition to making sure that dog B respects A's space, you can show A that B isn't a threat by tossing something delicious into the bowl when B approaches. Try chicken or cheese. This has worked wonders for my overly sensitive/reactionary dog, Izzy. Keep it all positive and take itty bitty baby steps. Hope that helps!

Great example. I was thinking this method might just make the dog OK with the owner, but not others (which is the case for you, so it can happen). The problem is that its not really addressing the *instinct* to guard... all I see is positive association with the owner. Replace the owner with a sitter for a couple days and who knows... I think the most important thing is to not take things from a dog regularly, without at least trading higher-value items. Dont awaken the instinct to guard.

My friend rescued an American Akita that is not properly trained and gets aggressive if someone gets near him whilst eating and since its a old and big dog , its much more difficult and scary to try and fix this behaviour , can anyone tell us if this behaviour can be fixed ? And how ? If it was a smaller less intimidating dog I could but to be honest a big and powerful Akita is a different story ...

Also if you never want your dog to be food aggressive dont play that stupid fucking " I'm gonna get it" game! People sometimes end up teaching their dog these bad habits and when the dog growls and scarfs down the food its all fun and laughs til your dog starts growling and snapping at you trying to be near them while eating or even picking up the empty bowl! That game is not funny and it breaks a dogs trust and teaches them to growl to keep you away. No "Im gonna take it" "Im gonna get it" "Gimmie that gimmie that!!" Cause I promise you 1000000 dollars your dog will start to snatch food, run off with toys and not come back to you, get defensive while eating or playing, and have a all around lack of faith in you. Its so simple STOP TEASING YOUR DOG WITH THINGS!

I'm not a fan of this method. The dog is too excited and needs to be calmer before eating. Move the dog a few feet back and have it sit until calm. Repeat as necessary. The dog will learn to sit calmly at dinner time.

“I start off with getting a dog that doesn’t have food aggression problems and use them as an example. Pet the dog. Good... and that’s how to prevent your dog from guarding his food bowl positively.” Absolutely worthless...
