I really hope that these patients are evaluated by an SLP before these nurses are involved.

I'm so sorry sorry to hear about your mother's passing. You and your family are in our thoughts. Unfortunately sometimes caregivers don't have all the appropriate tools or knowledge and it leads to such cases. Hopefully by spreading knowledge of geriatric care we can help combat this. I'm incredibly sorry for your loss and hope that you are doing alright.

We used this in my speech language pathology class as an example of what not to do I am serious. One should be careful using false information this could potentially be deadly.

I hope you're doing okay, 28 years old here and I am dealing with the same issue for the past two months. I know that anxiety being afraid to eat cuz you don't want to aspirate and get pneumonia. Used to be a big eater before an incident thinking I inhaled food (fried boneless fish) and ever since, I cough and have trouble swallowing after a few bites in. May you seriously be okay and recover, bless your heart.

Mom is an 82 yr with last stage dementia. She coughs a little when eating. I've noticed that she has been pocketing her food. It usually takes her an hour to eat. Her food is chopped/ mashed and given with a teaspoon. My concern is if I should puree her food and give her thickener in her liquids. I will clean her mouth and keep her elevated at night as you've directed. Also I will go to those links as well. Thanks for sharing. Its hard when you don't know what you are doing and a love one can't tell you what's going on. 🌹

This Woman is a "real" professional Nurse. I only wish these Nurses cared for my Mother, who passed away suddenly 3-weeks ago. She suffered from COPD (emphysema). She was not being fed w/a feeding tube however, I feel she died from "aspiration" or "aspiration pneumonia". None of her doctors will confirm this. The Nurses who cared for my mother were incompetent, unfortunately.

My mom had 2 strokes. In last two weeks she had aspiration pneumonia. Caregiver didn't know this. I told her about it, but she refuses to believe its not from eating and swallowing. Anyways, sadly my mom passed away 2 days ago from this. :(((

Rose, I am so sorry for your loss. It's really a tragedy when we put our trust in these Nurses (caregivers) and our loved one's die due to their negligence. I just lost my Mom, almost 4-weeks ago now.
