I watched a young man with a Radio and a honda civic after a few days of driving by to figure out my neighbors schedule pull up the drive and open the door and put his car inside and shut the door I called 911 and he was arrested but honestly if i had not ben watching he would have gotten away no problems. Thanks for posting your tip a person can never ever be to prepared.

A neighbor did it differently. He has children so using a zip tie or other item to block the release (in case of fire) was a no-go. Instead, he used a piece of sheet metal and made a barrier near the release mechanism. The sheet metal was cut into a 2.75" wide strip, then bent into a "V" shape pointing towards the door. It extended back past the release arm and was secured to the carrier using epoxy. The V shape diverts the wire hangar or probe away from the release and you can't see it through a window. He also changed the "knob" on the end of the pull rope to a porcelain cabinet knob that was tapered - nothing to really get a hold of with the wire hangar.

If the children can't pull down on the release handle, how can they manually lift the door open? That second part would seem more physically difficult.

After watching several videos on this subject, I finally saw one with an alternative on coat hanger. I would prefer the coat hanger myself because it is so hard to compromise this not like the plastic zip ties but yeah you are right in case of emergency, zip ties are easier to break but through practice and with a short ladder I have in my garage or a chair, this becomes easier to do. What I would do with the coat hanger or a thicker wire is just twist it couple of time and I would totally eliminate the pull cord. Well, I am talking about safety and burglary. My 2 cents, thanks again.

This is a simple and elegant solution that easily preserves release function (tape a side cutter to the wall to make Danny Gurvis happy) for the homeowner. Good idea, thanks!

It is also just as easy to remove the handle and shorten the rope, so that they cannot be hooked and pulled to the opening of the door.

Really appreciate your video! A word of CAUTION: it is an EMERGENCY pull cord and release mechanism. In the event of an emergency and an emergency escape is necessary to open garage, such as a fire, you will find yourself entrapped in your own security. Perhaps a plate to block a coat hanger's insertion instead of deactivating a safety feature would be a better option. No sarcasm was intended in this comment. Stay safe!

@jaketcham well the other way with the zip tie was actually done with that in mind, it just makes it a little harder to use which is no problem when you have any sort of upperbody strength. And a rare criminal act? do you realise how many people's homes are broken into in the US in a single day? preparing yourself for something that might happen is alot easier then having to deal with major loss in your home, and to think a zip tie could have saved you

Did you ever try to fish the emergency release rope from the out side with a coat hanger?? Next to impossible when you can't see what you'r doing. Yes if you have windows in the top section yu can see, but then why not break the glass and reach in and pull the rope. Most people don't just stand on the ground to get a coat hanger over the top of a + 7 foot door. So if I see any in front of your garage door on a ladder playing with a coat hanger, I'll stop and ask if I can help.

Installing a cover plate, possibly 18" wide directly to the arm of the track would block any type of pick or coat hangar from getting to the release mechanism from the outside. The zip tie is fine for a coat hangar but not for anything more rigid.

How is the garage being open affecting this at all? It's showing how to make it more difficult to release the door from the chain/motor. If the door was shut, everything he showed in the video would still work the same. If you don't know anything about garage doors your probably shouldn't comment negatively.

They hook the rope with the hanger and then yank on the handle. Your zip tie won't work unless you shorten the rope so it can't be pulled out of the gap at the top of the door.

My garage door opens by itself sometimes. Fortunately, one of my neighbors calls me to let me know; he has even had to go in to push the button and rush out when I was away on vacation. Will this prevent that from happening? My equipment is rather old and I haven't used a remote with it for probably 5 years or so.

Garage door openers, either the key pads or the ones in your car, use codes to open the door. Those codes needs to be changed. Google how to change the codes. Some criminals will cruse through a neighbor hood with stolen openers hitting them to see if they have ones that work with doors. When they find one they will keep using it until the owner wises up and changes the code or the opener.

I only have a hole in the actual moving part of this mechanism, where the rope went, no upper hole on the plastic on top to tie it off, I don’t see this addressed in any video, the door opener is only a couple of years old. Any suggestions? I am feeling very vulnerable and I have expensive locked together with hardened steel, but they can carry these out if they bring two big guys.

+Danny Gurvis the emergency access feature is indeed present to allow you to open the garage door in event of power failure. I'll hazard a guess that this feature has never been intended for wheelchair bound homeowners or children because 1) the pull cord in its normal state is too high for a child or person in a chair to reach and 2) once disconnected from the trolley the door must be lifted by brute strength, even with spring assist, impossible for a child and most of those confined to a wheelchair. As I said earlier, this indeed IS a good move to make to try to slow down someone who wants to enter your garage--the homeowner knows it's there and can plan for it. You would know this if you ever got out from behind a computer and off your flat weak bureaucrat wanna-be ass.

You realize this wouldn't work on a garage door with windows right? All you have to do is smash the window and cut the zip tie. People with windows on the garage door would have to cut off the metal arm, that is the only way. Leave a little material left on the arm for pliers or channel locks to lock on if you need to use the release.

What about if the thief fishes the T-cable to the outside of the garage door and then pulls it to break the zip-tie??? Granted that wiring the quick release shut would stop the thief but the drawback would be rendering the quick release useless unless you unwind or cut the wire.

zip ties only makes it take 2 minutes longer to get in... if there is zip tie you pull the clevis pin instead and push the connector rod out with a wire hanger while taking the pressure off the carriage unit by pressing the door up or down as needed since there is always some play with the weather seals

you are probably more unsafe disabling the garage door release as shown in the video, there is a reason for the track release people. i'd far rather take my chances with an extremely rare criminal act than have both cars trapped in the garage if the power to go out. find a better way to lock your garage door.

Eliminating the EMERGENCY ACCESS FEATURE is wrong. Whereas this shows a weakness in the security design, it is deliberately there for manual opening in case of an emergency. Eliminating or contravening the emergency escape function, is potentially life threatening. Tell me....how does one get out of the door if the power has failed? Deliberately disabling the emergency egress function can leave you liable to a charge of negligence, if a death were to occur as a result of being unable to escape an emergency situation. Negligent Homicide can bring a 25 year - life incarceration sentence. Do So At your own peril!
@soanonso
@soanonso 9 жыл бұрын
Did you even watch the video? It was not suggested to eliminate the emergency release, but to use a zip tie to make it harder to open with a coat hanger.
@dannygurvis3553
@dannygurvis3553 9 жыл бұрын
slantedview the whole reason the simple to operate emergency release was designed that way, was to comply with building code, life safety codes and ADA. Eliminating the emergency egress function or even making it more difficult to function is gross negligence. Suggesting to eliminate or "make it harder" to operate is gross negligence. Any self respecting person or respectful of others would understand that life safety outweighs physical security of any application and rightly so. This emergency escape feature is deliberately designed to make it simple and easy for any person, including those that may be physically challenged to easily operate this life saving feature.
