This film deserves a re-release with a remaster. MGM let's do it already! What's the hold up?
@robbbie856 жыл бұрын
Unfortunately the hold up is that either the Goldwyn estate or more likely The Gershwin estate refuse to release this movie as they were unhappy with the musical treatment in the film.
@sjeunson16 жыл бұрын
From IMDB The Gershwin family was dissatisfied with the film, largely because it was not staged as a true opera with all the recitative performed musically, and also because the two leads had their singing voices dubbed. The film's original director, Rouben Mamoulian, wanted to film on-location, but producer Samuel Goldwyn refused and insisted on using soundstages. When a mysterious fire broke out and destroyed the sets, Mamoulian again requested that the film be made on-location. Enraged, Goldwyn felt that Mamoulian was taking advantage of a misfortune, promptly fired him, and hired Otto Preminger, who made the film on soundstages in Hollywood. The film is currently (Nov. 2002) withheld from release because of actions by both the Gershwin and Goldwyn estates, as neither Samuel Goldwyn nor the Gershwin family were satisfied with the film.

@@sjeunson1 It is an absurd, dog-in-the-manger faux fastidiousness of the Gershwin and Heywood Estates to refuse to release this film to audiences now and posterity, on the basis of the alleged suboptimality of its soundtrack; as that the lead actors did not themselves sing their songs. As with the prior Preminger film operatic masterpiece Carmen Jones, the excellent lead actors' vocals were dubbed excellently operatically by professional opera singers. The dead ought not deaden the cultural life of the living by selfishly hoarding such treasures that since 1959 could have been educating the young as to their achievement potential, and the whole world of the deep talents of all the actors, musicians and other artists and artisans who created this film derivative of Gershwin's original theatrical masterpiece. Parallel to an Oscar Hammerstein lyric about love in The Sound of Music, art isn't art "until you give it away"--objectify and disseminate it to humanity. This film should not be encrypted, mausoleumed with its now deceased auteurs.

I'm waiting for Warner Bros. Nichelle Nichols appeared in a production of Porgy and Bess, an American opera from the 1930s featuring a cast of characters who are mainly black. It would take too long to deal with the play’s impact or controversies, but what’s worth noting in Nichols’ case was that she also went on to appear in the 1959 film adaptation starring Sidney Poitier and Sammy Davis Jr., albeit in an uncredited role.

I saw this film for the first time 30-35 years ago at the state office building here in Harlem. It was presented by film history group. On an old school projector. Damon Evans gave a pre film introduction. He was playing Sportin Life in British production of Porgy and Bess. I think people should write Michael Feinstein like I did. He is on the board of the Gershwin estate. Maybe if there is enough support for a remaster we'll be able to see this film again. Also it's one of the few opportunities to hear Robert McFerrin in his vocal prime. Bobby's musical abilities didn't come from nowhere.

Goldwyn's lease of the rights was only 15 years, and after they expired, the film could not be shown without the permission of the Gershwin and Heyward estates, and even then only after substantial compensation was paid. Despite repeated requests, the Gershwin estate repeatedly refused to grant permission for the film to be seen.[25] As a consequence, the film has never been officially released on video or DVD in the U.S., however bootleg DVD-Rs, made from a 35mm anamorphic "E-K" release print, circulate among collectors, preserving 115 minutes of the original 138-minute whole.
