My great grandmother had a matching pair of Tiffany lamps. One day she decided they were old and ugly so she took the shades off, smashed them in the trash, and put on new shades she thought were prettier. My grandma got so worked up every time she told the story.
@camerrill3 жыл бұрын
@@jblyon2 Oh, dear. When I hear stories like this, I am reminded that the people of that era had been through the Great War and the Spanish Flu and had been hurt by nature. They had great hope that the future would hold better promise in the hope of science and "progress." If you want to hear a sad story, read up on the downfall of the Louis Comfort Tiffany business and property, especially his own ravishing home, Laurelton Hall, on Long Island. With his aesthetic crushed by the roaring twenties and art deco and modernism and his fortunes in tatters, his home fell into wrack and ruin. My former boss went to the home and found windows leaning against shed walls, the glass bulging out, everything in a state of decay. He bought everything he could salvage and built the finest, most comprehensive collection of his company's works in the world. Read up on the Morse Gallery in Winter Park, Florida. It is the closest thing to perfection I found when I lived in Orlando.

It’s usually either old people cleaning out their stuff so their kids don’t have to deal with it after they die, or it’s young people cleaning out their old grandparents stuff after they die. Neither have any idea of the value of old things. The old people may have inherited it from their parents and therefore have no idea how much it cost their parents to buy in 1920, and the young people have similarly inherited it and have no idea how valuable it is.

I bring my lamp in from Home Hardware: The base is steel and the lamp is opaque glass. Never transport the lamp like you did. Remove the shade because the value is in the shade. On the bottom of the base, you can see a piece of Elvis Presley velvet. That is there to protect it from slipping. If you remove the velvet, you'd probably see NO signature because these lamps were manufactured by the millions. Do you want to know the value of your lamp? Sure. Well, at auction, it would probably go for $6.00 to $10.00, on a good day. What? Really? My goodness. I never could have imagined. I love it even more now. LOL

Incidents like this are tests. If you rejoice and keep it, you fail. If you return the lamp to the people who unknowingly discarded it and tell them of it's value, you pass and become a better person. If you cannot find the owner, sell it and do good with the most of the money. Keep the remainder in clear conscience.

Plus you walk by it several times and nobody grabs it, validating your idea it is trash. Well trash is ugly most of the time so voila...It becomes a lot more attractive in one's mind once you know it's LCT and very valuable. Personally, I see plenty of art I can't see the monetary value in, especially modern art, so I can forgive this lady for not realizing what she had.
