(Preview) Line-by-Line - Germany: The Rheintal mainline around Karlsruhe in 2023

One of the busiest main rail routes in Germany is The Rheintal which links Mannheim with Basel. This strategically important international route can see well over a hundred freight trains each day with an equal number of passenger workings. For the observer or photographer, this line is well worth a visit. Our cameras filmed the action both in 2022 and again in October 2023. Two distinct section were chosen for our filming, the first to the north of Freiburg and the second at and to the north of Karslruhe.
Container and intermodal traffic dominate this route where we see Classes 193, 475, 189, 182 and 482 on these workings. Mixed freight with class 152, 185 and 187 are also seen. Block freight workings as well as local passenger workings, class 101-powered intercity trains and ICE units make up the rest of the workings seen.
This programme gives a great oversight of the trains and traction seen on this busy route as well as giving a good idea of some of the stations and locations at which to call. A description of both passenger and freight train workings are given where known.
