It baffles me that people will lie to you about a car while they're selling it to you from their own home. Many people today are not polite and don't live within the law..... a disgruntled buyer could come back and torch your house. It's for that reason that when I recently sold one of my trucks, it was shown to and inspected by the buyer in the DMV parking lot. I'm flat-honest about what issues it had and provided every last (redacted) receipt for all the years I owned it, but you never know what might set someone off, and I'll be damned if I'm going to let a stranger know where I live. Could they find me on their own? Yeah, probably, but why make it easy?

Man I go back and forth on that. There are so many shady dealers now too that basically just flip cars. Take in a crap trade, wash it and put new tires on it and put it in the lot for $2k over market and then say they are a no haggle dealer 😂 literally can’t trust anyone.
@arrowhead4554 ай бұрын
Sorry about the problems you’re dealing with. Hope you got a deal on it regardless. For this reason, I like to work with vetted dealers who specialize in these vehicles. Yes, there is a premium paid, but it’s almost always worth it. When they screen potential inventory, they know the usual problem areas to check and account for them. They bring them up to you unsolicited while reviewing the car. By no means does this replace your own inspection, but it’s helpful to work with someone who is proactive and honest. Private sellers, unless close by or you know them, too much of a crapshoot. Just ensure the dealer you are working with is legit - check references and ask for recommendations. This will take care of a lot of issues before you even lay eyes on the car. And when you do, they’re going to give you the good and the bad.

Hang in there! I purchased my C5 10 years ago and got lucky with a seller who pointed everything out. We became friends and still see each other. I however have spent more on all the upgrades and repairs than the car cost. Doesn’t matter because I love it and poured a lot of sweat into it. Hey, be glad you can make the repairs yourself. I also have the Light Pewter Metallic and get lots of compliments. We look forward to more C5 content!

I'm sorry that you're finding out so many annoying deficiencies on the car now, although it still seems to me to be a car worth having and fixing. I think the C5 and C6 Vettes, especially the Z06 models, are the best years to own. I also think that this car, if it's in good condition, will be in high demand as cars continue to devolve into over-priced pieces of junk that are no fun to drive. I have a friend who is a Mercedes guy who recently bought a 1986 MB 560 SL. The car is in decent condition but needs work on a lot of little things. He's a financial services executive but is also a gearhead who loves to work on cars. I'm giving him advice on the car and he is going to make it a project to fully restore it. Given the selection of current models of this car, plus the cost and reliability, his car is a good deal for the classic style and built like a tank reliability of the older MBs. IMHO, if this car ticks nearly all your boxes then I would say that it is worth the time, effort and expense to fix it. You are obviously very adept with mechanics and could probably get it into great shape, without spending a fortune. Again, look at what it would cost to get a new car, or even a used one, that has the style and performance you have in this at a reasonable price. Personally, the only thing I would consider possibility is getting a Z06 in the C5 or C6 era that doesn't have valvetrain issues with the LS-7 engine. Other than a 911 Carrera S, this is one of the few cars I would want to own if I had to give up my Z. Good luck with the car and keep us informed.

I feel your struggle. It's hard when looking for a used car especially when you have to drive a distance to get to it. I'm looking for a spare and I'm trying to ask the same questions before I have to lug the family for a 2.5+hr drive anywhere to find a decent priced vehicle. At the end of the day all you can do is just hope that the important parts are solid enough that they will last you the life of ownership as you customize it to your liking.

But at this point moving forward, you know what work will be done and by whom. When buying a Vette like this, never pay for mods, while they may provide paperwork on who and what was done, you never know how it was driven. I was fortunate last October when I bought my C5 2003 from a Nissan dealership. All original w/ 68K miles. I flew 600 miles to look at it, but like you I asked a lot of questions first. I let them know upfront I have 20 plus years of experience with Vettes, they needed to answer all my questions. They answered all questions and even put the car on a rack and sent me a very detailed video from under, the engine bay with motor running, and all throughout the interior. First thing I did was to have all scheduled maintenance done, coolant, transmission, and diff flushes. I replaced the harmonic balancer as well. Good luck, I look forward to seeing the progress.
@SpeedCultureStudios4 ай бұрын
Never paying for mods is a good bit of advice for any vehicle. And you never really know how a vehicle was driven-that “it was driven by an older woman” line doesn’t mean anything lol. My wife is NOT “older,” but she has a lead foot and drives hard. And if you’re buying a 15+ year old vehicle, it’s had a long life already no matter what so like I said, we have to have reasonable expectations. Some people are just shady unfortunately. BUT the next owner of this vette will be please, because it will be freshened up and everything will be documented here on this channel! 😀

Could it be that the previous owner’s standards are not that high? The small cracks, the minor scratches for example might not be a big deal to him considering it’s a 20 year old car or so. With that being said, he should’ve definitely told you about the bearings, trans issues and all of the other mechanical issues
@SpeedCultureStudios2 ай бұрын
I could give him the benefit and say his standards are lower if only asked general questions. But when I specifically ask-is the windshield free of cracks? Are all gauges working in the dash? What’s the tread life on the tires? Etc. That becomes a blatant lie

Sorry man, I would have walked away from that car. If there is curb rash on wheels the owner does not care about his car. When I purchased the 02 Camaro it only had 3,400 miles on it. So yeah I was lucky. That car is dying for a cam and heads. Might as well do everything while its opened up, lifters, trunnion upgrade I recommend CHE, oil pump, harmonic balancer etc etc. You will have a 450whp + depending on your goals. It will be a fun ride for sure.

You need to learn how to ask specific questions. If he says the interior is 85%, ask him to send you pictures of the reason it's not 100%. If he balks at answering or doing the things you ask, walk away. Sorry, this is all on you, take responsibility for it.
@SpeedCultureStudios4 ай бұрын
I don’t think you listed to half of the video 😂 The interior was the least of my concerns-plans of making my own shift boot and installing new seats moved my focus to more important areas. Can’t get any more specific than “is there a CEL and do all the gauges work?” Or “what is the condition of the tires?”
@charleyfrancis86712 ай бұрын
Curb rash on 20-year-old high mileage wheels is not unusual. You say you didn't have unrealistic expectations but clearly you did and you looked at and test drove the car and still purchased it! I like most of your other vids but this one is very whiny.
@SpeedCultureStudios2 ай бұрын
You didn’t listen to what I said. And curb rash on any wheels let along all 4 is definitely unusual. I’ve never curbed a wheel in 25 years 😂 I know what to expect of a vehicle if a certain age-the point is when yo ask specific questions and someone gives you answers, you tend to take them at their word. It’s not whiny. You’re fine with people misleading you?
@charleyfrancis86712 ай бұрын
I never believe anything anyone tells me about a car I'm looking to purchase. I will give their words some consideration if they have paperwork to back it up. I've also paid people in the town the vehicle in question is located to take a look for me or have it checked out at a shop BEFORE I make the trip. Anyone legit is going to be okay having a legitimate shop take a look at the car in question. I'm pretty much a car whore, I've purchased easily a hundred cars in my life. I've flown and driven across the country for vehicles and I'm not afraid to say no, and I have. That you drove 3 1/2 hours... yeah that's a yawn. By your own words there were many clearly obvious red flags and flashing lights that the vehicle was not as described.... Yet, you purchased it anyway. If you didn't allow yourself enough time to get the vehicle inspected, that's on you. Yes the video is whiny.
@SpeedCultureStudios2 ай бұрын
@@charleyfrancis8671 There is no paperwork for "are the wheel bearings good" or "how much tread is on the tires." You always take what people say with a grain of salt, but generally people fib about things you can't see. Rarely do people blatantly lie about things you can see immediately walking up to or getting into a vehicle. Yes, I still purchased the vehicle. You probably skipped through the video -- but I said several times that nothing was major enough to scare me, and I just used the points to negotiate a better deal. This is a KZbin channel. I share and document -- it's not whiny -- I'm just detailing the experience. I can't even count the number of cars I've purchased or how many states I've covered to look at them. I've been doing this a long time and have NEVER had anyone just flat out lie. I don't trust other people to look at vehicles for me and I don't need to pay a shop when I could just drive myself. If its a flight away, then sure. People are just getting very shady these days. That's the point.
@gotmylk4 ай бұрын
Dishonest people suck, but if the deal wasn't good for you the car wouldnt be in your garage right now and this revenue generating video wouldnt exist. The PoS seller did you a solid. No one cares , especially you, about a car you bought with no issues that can be covered in one 2 minute video without repeat content you can capitalize on. You saw the car in person and still pulled the trigger. That's on you. I've driven 2.5 hours each way to make purchases that were clearly misrepresented by the seller. Lost some time and fuel but didn't come home with anything that wasnt in the end acceptable for the price.
@SpeedCultureStudios4 ай бұрын
Definitely did NOT do me a solid lol, but as I said, I used it to my advantage to get a better deal and I knew I’d get content out of it. The issue is dishonesty. I’ve driven 8 - 10 hours to look at cars that turned out to be crap. Again, it’s just the dishonesty.
@gotmylk4 ай бұрын
@SpeedCultureStudios yeah the dishonesty sucks but it's a tale as old as time. Only now content creators can generate revenue off of publishing their experience. Which again, you'd drive and capture a lot less interest with a "perfect C5 I purchased from really honest seller" video. If the car wasn't worth the price and potential to capture viewers you would've passed on the purchase. His dishonesty got you content. The seller knew he was coming down on price when he posted his sale. Even though he was dishonest you still bought the car. And now we all get to see you do repairs and fun stuff with it. Which would not be much fun of all was 100% and you had nothing to work with.
