The cuts on the feet probably come from scraping on the ground when he hangs from moms underside as she walks. Like someone else said he will not survive past weaning he cant forage, cant get to shelter, cant climb to get away from danger. Honestly he would probably do better if his lower part of his legs were amputated. It sounds cruel but they r just weighing him down. I AM NOT SAYING its anyone's responsibility or anyone should take responsibility to have this done I'm just saying my opinion.

These are some of the most resilient and adaptive creatures on the planet... I wouldn't count them off quite yet I've seen videos of adults and adolescents whose limbs are almost completely bone and they do very well these are incredible animals that survive horrendous wounds that other animals would not a big part of it has to do with the way that they keep the wounds clean from bugs to debris and rotten their bad skin picked off They really are remarkable animals.

At the 1:38 - 2:00 min. mark it looked as though the mother had a healing wound on her right knee cap. If that was a wound, then there must've been one helluva battle over something. Their fights usually don't go that far unless it's between males. This infant really tugs at my heartstrings. Thanks for going to all the trouble to answer our comments and questions, JW. You know, I've noticed that about the injured and permanently lame monkeys, that they don't feel sorry for themselves. I've watched countless videos with hurt monkeys and never not one time did they ever feel sorry for themselves. They just get on with living the best way they can. They make up for the injuries they have. Whether that's a missing hand, or a broken foot or even if half of their face is sliced in two. They work around it to survive.

I feel so incredibly sorry for this little guy, and I can only send prayers and wishes, his way, for a miraculous recovery of some sort. Otherwise, as a veterinarian, I can, unfortunately, say that the lifespans of handicapped animals, if left in the wild, are known to be notoriously short-lived, not to mention, filled with immeasurable challenges.

Considering the low chances of survival it’d probably be kindest for it to be put to sleep as the natural death may be slow and agonising. Animals are very adaptive tho so perhaps since his mother is still feeding him he might have the strength to drag his lower half around. I’ve seen animals overcome the odds before, the will to survive is a powerful thing.

Feel really bad for this little guy. Several people mentioned that they thought he had a little movement in his upper leg. I agree. I was in a bad car accident when I was 25. I was on a ventilator and couldn't move from neck down. Had right side compression fracture of C5, 6 and 7 and several other fractures of the spine. Of course I was terrified. I couldn't communicate with my doctors and nurses. One day I moved my right large toe. My spinal cord wasn't severed but swelling was putting pressure on my spinal cord. So as the swelling went down I was able to move more and more. Sorry I got carried away with comment. Dont give up on the little guy. It is totally possible that he will get movement in his legs and recover also.

The wound looks like a male monkey's punishment bite, straight through the spine. This is a dead baby still breathing. If mama looks after it until it's weaned, it won't be able to get around then. That means no food except pity feeding by people, no safety as it cannot climb quickly if at all and no shelter if it makes to winter (won't be able to get into the group for warmth). Monkeys should not be given human food. It's bad for them in so many ways, too much sugar (causing them to become diabetic), too much energy (leading to obesity and excessive breeding), loss of foraging skills in the young and a reliance on humans to feed them. During lockdown many monkeys starved or were killed in battles over foraging grounds.

He is probably an offspring from another male monkey and the "king" male leader only allows his own offspring in the pack. He could have also been at the wrong place at the wrong time and was caught in a bad fight between 2 monkeys fighting each other? I really do think that "maybe" the injuries resulted from the king trying to kill the poor little guy. My opinion is based on the width of the bite and the possible age of the little guy too. This is just my opinion.

I agree. Let us know how many hind leg fractures the hapless baby monkey gets when she holds him like at 13:45 and inadvertently drops him from forty feet to the hard ground below. Does he get surgery for his multiple compound fractures or no medical treatment at all because his state did not opt in for Medicaid? If she voted for Orangutan Donald Trump in the last monkey/great ape election then it is unlikely mother monkey signed up for Affordable Primate Care Act (APCA). Baby Monkey will have very crooked legs if he survives all the fractures and weathers any possible infections. The real test for it will be when mom gets pregnant again and has her next baby. I wonder if it will be able to survive without clinging on her. Eventually she will wean him off for next years infant. I’ve seen one monkey in videos walking handstand style, but I can’t imagine it’s easy to function in a troop like that. So crazy.

At about 15:41 baby is trying to use a part of his leg ....his thigh muscle. So he is trying. I can see in other parts of the video he has a tiny bit of movement in the thigh area. I believe he has some type of spinal injury ....hopefully he can heal to some degree. Such a poor sweet baby. Thanks mom for taking care of this little one so well.

As the infection and wound heal, the swelling over or near his spine will lessen, and he will gradually get a lot of his feeling back in his legs, although how much remains to be seen. In the part showing the little guy a week later, at 15:02 mins into the video, you can see him move at least the upper part of his legs, or thighs, especially his right one, on his own a couple of times. This means that he is not permanently paralyzed and that the swelling is the cause of the paralysis, and that as the swelling decreases, the feeling returns. This has happened several times to babies in the Cambodian temple troops, and when they healed and the swelling near their spines went down, they began to regain the use of their legs. It happened to Janna, Lori or Lola, Brittney (RIP), and most recently to Vigo, who is now mostly healed.

Surfelvis I find it amazing that these tiny macaques can heal and return to normal use after a spinal injury!! A human child couldn't heal the nerves that are damaged from the pressure of the swelling and it's heart breaking! My daughter was hit by a car that went off the road and came up into our yard, she spent 6 months in a pediatric hospital that helped her heal, while there we met so many spinal cord injured children with absolutely no hope for the future. Without putting them through hell like usual, I wish scientists could find out what these macaques have that we don't to help them repair their own spinal cord injuries.

His momma is surely determined to accommodate for him, he is very fortunate to have her as his mom because some can be vicious. I hope she continues to care for him once he is weaned. Or perhaps a rehabilitation will take him after he's weaned. Life is full of hardships & it's sad to watch.
