Priarie Falcon and Ferruginous Nests 2023

A year ago, I got a chance to go on nest patrol. On this day I went with fellow falconers to look at Prairie falcons nest and a Ferruginous hawk nest outside of Boise. These birds are someof the many species that are a part of Morely Nelson Birds of Prey National Conservation Area.
Prairie falcons nest in ledges such as cliffs and canyons and would find crevices along the walls to protect their young from other predators. Like many falcons, Prairie falcons would hunt birds but are also known to go after ground squirrels for food.
Ferruginous hawk like to nest in tall flat areas like trees and poles. Conservation groups have placed in nesting platforms all over open lands so that the hawks can nest safely. Despite their large size, Ferrugs have small feet that can only catch small prey like rodents, in particular ground squirrles.
Ground squirrles are a main staple for many birds of prey in this region. The numerous colonies of these small animals all over Southern Idaho is one of the many reasons there are so many birds of prey in the Snake River Valley..
