UNDER-RESTRICTION...MILITARY PARADE OF THE 25th of MARCH, 1821 MEMORIAL IN ATHENS 25th March 2012!
On this the 24th and 25th of March 2012 -a historical and religious holiday celebrating the successful War of Independence against the Ottoman Empire in 1821- only a very small percentage of the Population attended. Whereas, the fully-geared Police forces (riot police, policemen, special squads, plain-clothes officers, even snipers...) were equal -if not more- than the people attending, and were in a constant state of readiness to Engage.
In addition to that, the number of people who did attend, were, for the first time in recent history, ENTIRELY FORBIDDEN to enter Syntagma Square, let alone observe/cheer from the sidewalks on Amalias avenue, directly in front of the building of Greek Parliament - which has ALWAYS been the Right and Privilege of all Greek citizens, even during the period of the Dictatorship of 1967-74.
These two days of parades were, by far, much less...Democratic than ever in recent Greek history.
