What people don’t understand is the feel and the real driving experience they bring. For some, that 5K loss is worth that driving experience.
@hullinger
@hullinger 4 жыл бұрын
I completely agree with you on the driving experience that you get from a special car and that sometimes that experience costs some money. That Mercedes S65 had a way of making an ordinary drive to the store much more exciting. It had a way of making a traffic ladened highway relaxing and peaceful and of course I got goosebumps with every cold start. Thanks man for watching and for making that comment!

@eringdoty

As a used car at $25k, you still have to budget $3-5k per year for tires and maintenance. Remember, this car was $220k brand new so it has to be maintained as such. I have an '09 and it's key to maintain it at a MB dealership and keep up with repairs to have an enjoyable car. Also, flush the ABC fluid system regularly or you will be replacing these expensive components (google it!).

5k a year for maintenance of a V12 car seems pretty reasonable to me. I was expecting 10k+ tbh, so I guess owning one of these wasn't as expensive as I thought.

well after watching this, I'm super happy I became a technician not worrying about someone else's labor and only mine. if I wasn't it would be much harder to justify having my 08 s63. But I got into this career because I love cars so much and working on them is a joy and a great challenge in the end. We drive a car every day to do our daily routines and I can't stand not having a car I enjoy driving every day. Mercedes definitely grew on me more and more when I worked there for a few years training to become a tech, and man once I stepped into that 09 SL 63, and turned on that glorious M156 I knew I had to have an AMG.

I have a "regular" 2007 C216 CL600, non AMG trim (M275 engine). I bought it 6 yars ago for around 18 k€, but I knew where I was going, since I knew the owner, and therefore, the car. Had the whole maintenance record. Once I bought it, the first year was indeed quite bumpy, but mostly because the dealership didn't do proper maintenance. First week : all the coolant spilled on the road because of a cracked heater valve. Part cost 40 €, labor 70 €, plus coolant. Then, I still had a main coolant leak : main radiator, 600 € parts + labor. A few months after that : gearbox wouldn't shift properly, flushed the transmission, got better for a while, then died. Had to replace the solenoid plate + connector, at a dealership, for around 1100 € : no sign of transmission oil change in the history (it had 150 000 km at the time), so that may be the reason. But the worst was yet to come, a well known failure point : the coil packs. When we bought the car, it as 147 000 km, but I couldn't see a spark plug change on the history. I should have changed them right after getting the car, but my loss. Worn spark plugs strained the right coil pack rail, and took the HV transformer with it. 1300 € for the coil pack (instead of the 1850 € quoted), 635 € for the high voltage transformer, and 24 new spark plugs, 24 silicone boots, plus labor (and a new serpentine belt). Oh, also, cracked front right wheel, for three years. Lucky for my, I could have it repaired, and balanced nicely. What saves me is that I have a very good independant mechanic who knows these cars very well and works as well, or maybe better, than my local MB dealer, and at a fraction of a cost. Also, many parts can be found online (not the coil packs / HV transformer though) for cheap as well. It's been three years now, and I haven't done anything super expensive since. It runs well, I enjoy it, and plan to keep it (it isn't worth much anyway). 517 bhp / 850 Nm is plenty for me, it sounds great but not too obnoxious. Maintenance is indeed expensive, but when I see the cost of regular service at VW, Renault or Peugeot dealerships (here in France), I consider myself lucky with a TT V12. But you do have to know what you're getting into. My car is a weekend toy, not a daily, so there's that.

My basic takeaway, which I already knew and practice, is to have your Benz checked-out by an MB dealer or certified mechanic before you buy it.. The biggest expense was the brakes, a maintenance item, which easily would have been visually diagnosed in a pre-purchase inspection. Lastly, living here on the California coast I didn’t think any of the prices were exorbitant for what is in actuality...a super car!

I learned a long time ago that having a fancy car only brings stress to your life. You have to watch for door dings, scratches, dirt, kids messing with it... So now I drive an old S500 4-matic. Practically never wash it. It's got rust and paint flaking. I don't care. It's comfortable and quiet inside and that's all that matters to me.

And braking pads from brembo for 45e...air cond comp is 280e...4x tires from Michelin hurts at 650e...it s' a super ride ! Air suspension never changed! Only the air comp for 180e...of course! It has quite à low consumption of 8-9l on highways and 12l in city...Can run on GPL, or sp85...for cheep refull ! And costs around 3-4ke nowdays....before reset up the car ! Here the list: Bushings, Tires Sensors, Fuse Box, Control Arms, Diagnostic, Deleted All The Christmas Tree Checks Lights, Tires, Breaks, Speed One Sensor, Parking Sensor (for a LEXUS) Not to mention another 9k asking price for four air suspension that we refused to do before selling it. Your cost analysis makes one thing clear: $2900 for rotors and brakes out of the $5000 you spent in the year. A car with so many horses and so heavy is going to eat up tires and brakes. That’s a given. A six liter engine is going to require a lot of oil for lubrication. None of this is a surprise and is just routine maintenance.

You never buy these type of cars as an investment. I have a 2006 SL55 with the P30 performance package. Only 43 of these cars were ever ordered and sold in the US. I paid $25K w/65K miles and I set aside $10K for preventive maintenance. After 4 years I have spend $22K on preventive maintenance an Renntech upgrades. I have more into the car than it's worth. I don't give an F because the car gives me so much pleasure driving it everyday. It had a $143K MSRP and thanks to the wealthy 1st owner who took meticulous care of the car. You don't by a car as an investment, you buy these type of cars for the pure bliss they provide for 1/4 of the new MSRP. Please don't discourage others who have the dream - FCP Euro or other wholesale parts stores cost 1/2 of dealership priced. Also learning to work on these cars helps a lot too.

None of the "special Mercedes stuff" broke on it, is what I got from the video. Not bad. Ironically keeping it longer may have actually been the better financial move. I post this having bought an 04 E55 in June 2020 and just bought an 07 S550 a few weeks ago so I'm living the E55 and W221 life at the moment.

Do you think a Warranty that may have covered those Repairs would have changed your experience with the Benz?
@hullinger
@hullinger 4 жыл бұрын
I think a warranty would have totally been worth while. It may not have been a money saver but it would have at least given some piece-of-mind during my ownership. And that would have totally changed how I treated and drove that car. My whole ownership time with this Mercedes had me nervous that something really, really expensive might break at any time.
@thomassmithjr3557
@thomassmithjr3557 3 жыл бұрын
No. No one sells a warranty for a V12. You better have some money when it breaks down. I use to own a 600SEL so I know.

@@hullinger S 65 AMG is the ultimate machine for all about power and luxury. EU models 2007-2012 cost almost double price with 100 point presale check. Now, you know why, as mr Barry said. I have a S65 AMG mod 2011- since 2017. Total price included taxes in Greece is 130 000 euros. It s worth every cent. If you dont have money for those cars just make it over. So simply my friend. Any way, thanks for all videos.

Hey man, thanks for following along with the Mercedes. Had to believe it's been a year with this car. I'm glad she's gone but a bit sad too. I never really got a chance to let her stretch her legs. I did run her up to about 100 MPH at one point but nothing more. That car just ins't meant for the roads around here. She needs wide open spaces, for sure.

Im telling you my friend if you want a truly reliable good muscle Mercedes get you a W204 c63 amg maint cost are there but its nothing like the s classes. You dont get all the amazing luxuries of the S class but if you get the saloon you get a full size sedan with a V8 that sounds like nothing else in the world. No matter if your at work,mcdonalds or the doctors office when you start it everyone will know you. breakpads and rotors for a c63 will only run you 1200,youll make alot of random store trips just to be in it😂

So, you TCO for a year was only $416.00 per Mo??? That is an Amazing value compared to the TCO for the original owner. That being said, I have people trying to door dinging my S-Class in the parking lot because people are a$$holes!
Mercedes S65 is an INSANE VALUE!
