Since I visited Porto in 2015 I noticed this phenomena, abundant properties all over Portugal. I have noticed that Portugueses have emotional connection to their properties and they don't want to sell them especially older generations... others left Portugal and immigrated to other countries and don't care about these abundant houses. Some houses have multiple heirs and if one of them doesn't want to sell then the property stays as is without inhabitants... Unfortunately, it is sad story and nothing can be done..Hoping you are enjoying your time in Portugal. Até logo😘

That’s right. Portuguese people have emotional connection to their old houses. When we were looking for land to build our house back in 2019 we visited a very nice rural property and the owner was inclined to sell, but there was a condition: we could never demolish the house on the property that had been built over 100 years ago for his great grandparents. He said he had been born there and it would break his heart to see that house demolished, although it was in poor condition anyway. At first I thought I had misunderstood him, such an unusual request. Needless to say we didn’t accept the condition and he didn’t sell. 🤷🏽‍♀️

This happens all over Portugal, there are abandoned houses, most in ruins all over the place, specially little villages spread along the mountains. The local newspaper in Vouzela ( central Portugal) recently launched a campaign to raise awareness about the issue and incentive people to sell or rent these properties, since there’s a shortage of available housing for all the immigrants that keep arriving in the country. Some people have to travel over 100 Km each way, everyday, to work since they can’t find houses near their jobs. So it’s a serious problem and there’s no solution in sight 😢

Hi Silvia, this situation is very sad indeed 😢 I do know the situation in rural Portugal, when I was searching for a house I was a bit shocked by the amount of ruins in every village... the thing is that big and famous cities like Porto are less expected. I wish that someone will come up with a goog solution firstly and mainly for the local 🙏🏻

It's a problem in big cities everywhere, real estate developers and big time multi-property owners buying up properties only to leave them abandoned and empty, in order to artificially inflate prices throughout the city so they can demand higher prices. It is more lucrative for them to have abandoned properties and then drive up rents and sale prices than to have all properties occupied and maintained. It should be illegal, really.

It did became illegal in Germany not so long ago. Companies are not able to buy properties that are intended for housing anymore. The Germans tried different methods, none worked, now we will see whats up with this one. On another hand, I believe gov and state have to proactively invest in other options, like construction.

Not sure what the answer is but perhaps the local government could provide some grants towards reconstruction for their citizens with the stipulation that they have to live there afterwards. If they sell later, it has to be only to other locals and at a contracted lower price. Love the architecture. Thanks for sharing.

But I hear that the locals from more rural areas like farms with land their children end up moving to the cities for work and just life and then when they get too old this is why there is a good market out the for foreigners to buy land and farms. If these people’s children when they grow up are moving to the cities and locals are leaving the cities because it’s too expensive then where are they going? Maybe this is just a problem in the main tourists cities I don’t know. Glad to see you making videos again. I really need to start learning Portuguese as I plan to end up there. A little ruin with some nice land and some natural flowing water is my dream!

Inheritance laws in Portugal play a huge part. Parents have to leave 75% of their estate equally to all of their children, even if they do a will to the contrary. It's a law in Portugal. It's only needed for one of the beneficiaries not to agree with the others, they won't sign a particular paper and stall everything. A house can't be sold, etc. In England many families to preserve their estates they leave the house to one child. But for me as a portuguese person myself i find inheritance laws in England can be very unfair for the child/children who is left nothing.
@MyPortugalDream
@MyPortugalDream Жыл бұрын
Hi, thanks for your input on that subject 🙏🏻 I feel you, but I must ask, what about the parents free will? I mean, if the parents want to leave the house to the child that has supported them for years, they cannot... I believe in freedom, I want to choose to whom I will leave my belongings without any law forcing me to do it. If the law is about keeping the properties in local hands I can understand but don't decide for me how to split it among my loved ones. I hope I understood correctly. Anyway I respect any opinion and not judging no one, just sharing my point of view 🙏🏻✨
@pepperhill
@pepperhill Жыл бұрын
@MyPortugalDream that is what all english people i tell about this Portuguese law say. But for us the Portuguese (or maybe the majority) you the one who put those children in the world, it's your responsibility to what happen to them. You can't decide to give more to one and not the other. If one of them takes care of you give them the reminder 25%. Even if it was a friend who took care of you and not your children you can't give them all you want, just the 25%. If you don't speak with one of your children, it's your fault, you the one who raise them. The children you put in this world, each of them, are your responsibility for life. I think it is a healthy way of viewing your responsibilities as a parent. When you have children your free-will stops where your responsibility starts. What damage will you put upon the one child you don't want to give as much as their sibling? My partner is English and that has happen in their family. It's not about the money, it's about being loved by your parents. The deep hurt that was caused, the unfairness, and now that person is dead without knowing they left a devastated person behind. And also sometimes some children can be very manipulative and have an hold on a parent, without the parent realising. It's best if everybody knows from the start nobody will be left destitute. If you have parents (as we all have) you will never become destitute 😀

Zoning and construction laws make it impossible.. it would cost a fortune...First even though they are rotting, they want a fortune for them.. inflated beyond reason... To do any repairs,.laws, cultural laws, architects, structural engineers, taxes, utility taxes, no roads to bring in materials, everything brought by hand.. commissions, camaras, historical laws, you can't alter anything.... It's a costly huge nightmare and camara that would rather let it all rot than do anything to simplify anything....it's a costly legal and political nightmare to do anything....best to let it rot...
