I used to drive semi in the 90's and took walks around Mobile while I was laid over waiting for a reload. It was different then, people kept to themselves but were respectful. They took most responsibility for what went down in their areas and didn't mix much with other's from outlying areas. It was a way to live peacefully. There was something kinda' magical about them. It was better then, you could walk for miles and explore, people were just curious. Friendly. Some would walk with me for an hour or so and tell me stories.

Did you get to visit any at night? I grew up here but live in a different, nicer county now. My parents still live over there. When I joined the army about 8 years ago, they put up a barrier blocking over the bordering city chickasaw due to drugs and crime. My best friend from the army is from Missouri and he said east st louis is just a bigger version of prichard when I took him through. He didn't believe me until we got close to the entrance and then he quickly realized once we got shot at, this place is no joke lol.

This is everywhere in America. We do volunteer work in poor areas of my rural NC county, I've stopped being shocked by homes that haven't seen repair in years, but have lawns filled with cigarette butts and pepsi cans. One trailer we pass regularly has a huge trump flag flying next to it's front door, but part of the roof has caved in and is covered with a tattered tarp. Sometimes it's about bad choices.

I grew up in the Village back in the 80's. All the streets flooded back then too. We used to swim in them after a hard rain. It wasn't a bad place to live, just a bunch of poor folk trying to survive. Most of us ran together and there wasn't a big divide between races like it is nowadays. There was an equal mixture of black and white people. I miss my childhood.
